  • Mountain Glaciation

    Open Access•Arjen P Stroeven, Robin Blomdin•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2021

The Quaternary is characterized by long periods of glacier and ice sheet growth (glaciations) interspersed with short periods of glacier retreat and ice sheet decay (interglaciations). Glaciers form preferentially in high‐altitude and high‐latitude locations owing to low mean annual temperatures. Most of the world's high mountain ranges have therefore hosted glaciers during the Quaternary and have characteristic and often spectacular glacial eros…

  • Paleoglacial footprint and fluvial terraces of the Shaluli Shan, SE Tibetan Plateau

Open Access•Ramona Schneider, Robin Blomdin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

This study provides mapping of glacial and fluvial geomorphology in the Shaluli Shan region on the eastern margin of the south-eastern Tibetan Plateau. Based on TanDEM-X 12 m elevation data and GoogleEarth imagery, glacial valleys, ice-marginal moraines, glacial lineations, scoured terrain and fluvial terraces were mapped. Covering around 11,000 km 2 , this map is the first for this region to display geomorphology at a spatial resolution of 0.4 a…

  • The glacial geomorphology of western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica

    Open Access•Jennifer C H Newall, Taisiya Dymova et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

Reconstructing the response of present-day ice sheets to past global climate change is important for constraining and refining the numerical models which forecast future contributions of these ice sheets to sea-level change. Mapping landforms is an essential step in reconstructing glacial histories. Here we present a new map of glacial landforms and deposits on nunataks in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Nunataks are mountains or ridges t…

  • Deglaciation of Fennoscandia

Open Access•Arjen P Stroeven, Clas Hättestrand et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2016

To provide a new reconstruction of the deglaciation of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, in the form of calendar-year time-slices, which are particularly useful for ice sheet modelling, we have compiled and synthesized published geomorphological data for eskers, ice-marginal formations, lineations, marginal meltwater channels, striae, ice-dammed lakes, and geochronological data from radiocarbon, varve, optically-stimulated luminescence, and cosmogenic…

  • Glacial geomorphology of the Altai and Western Sayan Mountains, Central Asia

Open Access•Robin Blomdin, Jakob Heyman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

In this article, we present a map of the glacial geomorphology of the Altai andWestern Sayan Mountains, covering an area of almost 600,000 km2. Although numerous studies provide evidence for restricted Pleistocene glaciations in this area, others have hypothesized the past existence of an extensive ice sheet. To provide a framework for accurate glacial reconstructions of the Altai and Western Sayan Mountains, we present a map at a scale of 1:1,00…

  • Glacial geomorphology of the Tian Shan

Open Access•Arjen P Stroeven, Clas Hättestrand et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

The glacial geomorphology of the Tian Shan has been mapped, with the study area covering almost 638,000 km2. The map, designed to be printed at A0 size due to the elongated shape of the mountain range, is presented at a scale of 1:1,100,000. Five glacial landform categories are presented; glacial valleys, marginal moraines, glacial lineations, hummocky terrain and meltwater channels. These landform categories were mapped using the Shuttle Radar T…

  • Glacial geomorphology of the Shaluli Shan area, southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Open Access•Ping Fu, Jakob Heyman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2012

We present a glacial geomorphological map covering 1.04 × 105 km2 of the Shaluli Shan (Shan = Mountain), southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Using a 90 m digital elevation model from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission and 15/30 m Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus satellite imagery, we have mapped glacial valleys, marginal moraines, hummocky terrain, glacial lineations and ice-scoured terrain. Lineations and scoured areas largely overlap on the lo…

  • Importance of sampling across an assemblage of glacial landforms for interpreting cosmogenic ages of deglaciation

    Open Access•Arjen P Stroeven, Derek Fabel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

Deglaciation chronologies for some sectors of former ice sheets are relatively poorly constrained because of the paucity of features or materials traditionally used to constrain the timing of deglaciation. In areas without good deglaciation varve chronologies and/or without widespread occurrence of material that indicates the start of earliest organic radiocarbon accumulations suitable for radiocarbon dating, typically only general patterns and c…

  • Glacial Lake Vitim, a 3000-km 3 outburst flood from Siberia to the Arctic Ocean

    Open Access•Martin Margold, Krister N Jansson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

A prominent lake formed when glaciers descending from the Kodar Range blocked the River Vitim in central Transbaikalia, Siberia. Glacial Lake Vitim, evidenced by palaeoshorelines and deltas, covered 23,500 km 2 and held a volume of ~ 3000 km 3 . We infer that a large canyon in the area of the postulated ice dam served as a spillway during an outburst flood that drained through the rivers Vitim and Lena into the Arctic Ocean. The inferred outburst…

  • Glacial meltwater landforms of central British Columbia

Open Access•Martin Margold, Krister N Jansson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2011

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. The Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS), which grew and melted repeatedly across the mountain ranges of westernmost Canada during the late Cenozoic, has imprinted its legacy in the form of glacial landforms, such as meltwater landforms. However, despite their abundance, a coherent effort to map meltwater landforms has been lacking. Here, we present a first regional geomorphological map o…

Here we present a map covering 135,000 km at a scale of 1:660,000. The glacial geomorphology was mapped using 15 and 30 m resolution Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite imagery, a 90 m resolution SRTM digital elevation model, and satellite and aerial images displayed in Google Earth. Four landform categori…

  • Glacial geomorphology of the Bayan Har sector of the NE Tibetan Plateau

Open Access•Jakob Heyman, Clas Hättestrand et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2008

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. We here present a detailed glacial geomorphological map covering 136,500 km2 of the Bayan Har sector of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau—an area previously suggested to have nourished the most extensive Quaternary glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau. The map, presented at a scale of 1:650,000, is based on remote sensing of a 90 m SRTM digital elevation model and 15/30 m Landsat ETM+ …

  • Exposure ages from relict lateral moraines overridden by the Fennoscandian ice sheet

Open Access•Derek Fabel, David Fink et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

Lateral moraines constructed along west to east sloping outlet glaciers from mountain centred, pre-last glacial maximum (LGM) ice fields of limited extent remain largely preserved in the northern Swedish landscape despite overriding by continental ice sheets, most recently during the last glacial. From field evidence, including geomorphological relationships and a detailed weathering profile including a buried soil, we have identified seven such …
