Megaflutes in the Menteith Hills, central Scotland
‘Flutings’ or ‘flutes’ are elongated, flow-parallel subglacial bedforms associated with relatively fast flowing glaciers. Analysis of recently acquired high-resolution (50 cm) LiDAR data has identified the presence of large, very low-relief flutings on the Menteith Hills in Central Scotland. These subtle landforms, up to 1 km in length and 10s of metres wide, are interpreted as ‘megaflutes’, falling in between the accepted definition of flutes an…
Scottish Landform Example
The seabed landscape around the Summer Isles (NW Scotland) hosts classic examples of subaqueous moraines formed at a Late Pleistocene tidewater ice-sheet margin. This suite of moraines, now within the Wester Ross Marine Protected Area, records oscillatory retreat of the grounding line of (one or more) large outlet glaciers receding from the open waters of the Minch into the fjords of Loch Broom and Little Loch Broom at the end of the last (Weichs…
Increased North Atlantic dust deposition linked to Holocene Icelandic glacier fluctuations
Mineral dust concentrations are coupled to climate over glacial-interglacial cycles with increased dust deposition occurring during major cold phases over the last ~100 ka. Holocene records suggest considerable spatial and temporal variability in the magnitude, frequency and timing of dust peaks that reflects regional or local drivers of dust emissions and transport. Here, we present stratigraphical, geochemical and isotopic evidence for dust dep…
Distribution and classification of pockmarks on the seabed around western Scotland
Pockmarks are seabed depressions that represent primary evidence of rapid biogenic/thermogenic gas build up and fluid release from seabed sediments to the water column. We use a Geographical Information System (GIS) to analyse multibeam echo-sounder bathymetric data and use a range of semi-automated tools to map seabed pockmarks in fjords and adjacent coastal waters around western Scotland. We map 1019 individual pockmarks in 12 different hydrogr…
The geomorphology of Svínafellsjökull and Virkisjökull-Falljökull glacier forelands, southeast Iceland
A detailed, 1:10,500-scale, surficial geology and glacial geomorphology map of Svínafellsjökull and Virkisjökull-Falljökull glacier forelands in southeast Iceland depicts the landsystem imprint of Holocene glacier fluctuations, volcanogenic outburst floods and recent (post-1990) climate-induced rapid ice-front retreat. The map is based on field survey data in combination with 2012 airborne LiDAR data, 2009–2012 terrestrial LiDAR data and 2007 col…
Glacial geomorphology of the Tweedsmuir Hills, Central Southern Uplands, Scotland
The Quaternary glacial history of the Tweedsmuir Hills, Central Southern Uplands, Scotland, has received little attention since the 1980s, with earlier studies focussing on single lines of geomorphic evidence in isolated valleys. This study presents the first systematic glacial geomorphological assessment of the region, covering approximately 300 km2 with the map designed to be presented at A0. Mapping from remotely sensed imagery and field inves…
