Glacial geomorphology of Newfoundland, Canada
We present a synthesis of glacial geomorphology comprising Newfoundland and the surrounding continental shelf. During the last glaciation, this region was encompassed by the Newfoundland Ice Cap that coalesced with the Laurentide Ice Sheet and extended to the continental shelf edge. The subglacial geomorphic signal of terrestrial and marine portions of this ice sheet has been mapped using aerial photography, satellite imagery, SRTM DEMs, multibea…
Beryllium-10 dating of the Foothills Erratics Train in Alberta, Canada, indicates detachment of the Laurentide Ice Sheet from the Rocky Mountains at ~15 ka
The Foothills Erratics Train consists of large quartzite blocks of Rocky Mountains origin deposited on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountain Foothills in Alberta between ~53.5°N and 49°N. The blocks were deposited in their present locations when the western margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) detached from the local ice masses of the Rocky Mountains, which initiated the opening of the southern end of the ice-free corridor between the Cord…
Multiple rock-slope failures from Mannen in Romsdal Valley, western Norway, revealed from Quaternary geological mapping and 10 Be exposure dating
Oversteepened valley walls in western Norway have high recurrences of Holocene rock-slope failure activity causing significant risk to communities and infrastructure. Deposits from six to nine catastrophic rock-slope failure (CRSF) events are preserved at the base of the Mannen rock-slope instability in the Romsdal Valley, western Norway. The timing of these CRSF events was determined by terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide dating and relative chronolo…
Cosmogenic 10 be depth-profile chronology of late pleistocene alluvial fan deposits, Baja California, Mexico
Evidence for a 55–50 ka (early Wisconsin) glaciation of the Cordilleran ice sheet, Yukon Territory, Canada
Cosmogenic 10 Be ages on boulders of 54–51 ka ( n =4) on a penultimate Cordilleran ice sheet (CIS) drift confirm that Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 (early Wisconsin) glaciation was extensive in parts of Yukon Territory, the first confirmed evidence in the Canadian Cordillera. We name the glaciation inferred from the mapped and dated drift the Gladstone. These results are in apparent contrast to the MIS 6 (Illinoian) age of the penultimate R…
Terrestrial in situ cosmogenic nuclides
Overview of the Workshop on Secular Variations in Production Rates of Cosmogenic Nuclides on Earth
Measurements of cosmogenic nuclides made in situ in the Earth's surface are being used to help resolve a wide range of geologic and chronologic questions. Cosmogenic nuclides ( 3 He, 10 Be, 14 C, 21 Ne, 26 Al 36 C1 are presently used) can reveal rock exposure history information leading to estimates of timing of surface forming events, rates and styles of erosion, and timing and durations of episodes of burial. Depending on the problems being tac…
Extensive Boulder Erosion Resulting from a Range Fire on the Type-Pinedale Moraines, Fremont Lake, Wyoming
In July 1988, the FlatFish Range Fire burned over the type-Pinedale moraines at Fremont Lake, Wyoming, and caused extensive exfoliation of exposed boulder surfaces. The mass of exfoliated material from 130 of 1030 boulders investigated was measured and recorded with information concerning factors that could influence the extent of fire-induced exfoliation. The range in thickness of material removed from 98 randomly selected boulders within the bu…
