Geomorphological patterns and sedimentary facies in a modern mixed carbonate-siliciclastic lagoon (New Caledonia)
The New Caledonian lagoon is of particular interest for studying the controls on mixed carbonate–siliciclastic sedimentation. The large southwestern lagoon is bordered by a massive barrier reef only interrupted by few passes, while the narrower and shallower eastern lagoon is characterized by a more discontinuous barrier reef that is partially submerged to the South. Using bathymetric, backscatter imagery and seabed sampling, this study presents …
Holocene paleoenvironmental reconstructions in western Brittany (Bay of Brest)
The Bay of Brest (BB, NW France) is a semi-enclosed basin of 180 km2 subject to macro-tidal dynamics and to the fluvial influences of the rivers Aulne and Elorn, which combined drain watersheds of 2600 km2. This coastal environment is subject to natural climate oscillations overlaid on the long-term landscape transformations inherited from the post-glacial sea level rise and increasing anthropogenic forcing since the Neolithic (6.9 ka BP), and es…
Holocene paleoenvironmental reconstructions in western Brittany Bay of Brest
The Bay of Brest (BB) is a shallow estuarine environment in NW France. This semi-enclosed basin of 180 km2 is subject to multiple hydrodynamic factors including the dual influence of oceanic currents and fluvial discharges (Aulne and Elorn main rivers) and resulting in complex hydro-climatic and hydro-sedimentary processes. This study investigates with palynological data (continental: pollen grains and marine: dinoflagellate cysts) two kinds of d…
The Stone Tidal Fish Weirs of the Molène Archipelago, Iroise Sea, Brittany, Western France
This reports on a project that combined evidence gleaned from aerial photographs, place-names, interviews, topography, LIDAR data, and sonar bathymetry to locate stone tidal fish weirs in the Molène Archipelago. The results were verified by diver and pedestrian visual surveys. Models of Holocene sea-level change allowed a group of possibly Late Mesolithic–Early Neolithic weirs to be recognized, with a second group broadly dated to the later Neoli…
Modern morpho-sedimentological patterns in a tide-dominated estuary system
Long-studied with respect to its sedimentological features (1897), the Bay of Brest (Western Britanny, France) is a textbook example of a tide-dominated estuary. Characterised by macrotidal conditions, this estuary system is sheltered from the open sea (Iroise Sea) by a narrow strait that partitions the wave tide influences and continental/marine inputs. Sediments are supplied to the bay both by rivers (the Aulne and Elorn rivers) and by marine t…
