Multiproxy study of past three centuries of climatic variability and anthropogenic impact on Laguna Pocitos, western Pampa of Argentina
The northern sector of the Western Pampean Dunefield (central Argentina), characterized by Late Quaternary to Late Holocene aeolian morphogenesis and sedimentation under drier conditions than present, hosts numerous shallow lakes developed in the deflation basins of blowout dunes. A multi-proxy analysis, including magnetic susceptibility, charcoal, C and N content, stable isotopes, and pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs, was performed on a sedime…
Formation Processes and Environments in the Hinojo‐Las Tunas Shallow Lake System, Argentina Pampas
This work integrates taphonomic (archaeofaunistics and bioarchaeology) and geoarchaeological (geormorphology, pedologic, sedimentological and micromorphological analyses) information to discuss the depositional and postdepositional history of both surface and buried archaeological record related to past hunter–gatherer populations from the Central Pampean Dunefields of Argentina (South America). Radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence d…
Cueva Los Bancos, A New Archaeological Site with Early Occupations in the Southernmost Sector of the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina
We present new chronological data for the southernmost sector of the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas system of central Argentina. Recent excavations at the Cueva Los Bancos site in Sierra del Morro hill provided a date of ca. 9400 calendar years ago. This is the earliest absolute chronology of this sector, considered an ecotone between mountains and plains. Also thanks to Gustavo Politis and Laprei (Pretreatment Laboratory for isotopic samples) for man…
Geomorphology of the northeastern extreme of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
A 1:60,000 scale geomorphological map of the Argentine side of the northeastern extreme of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego in southernmost South America is presented. This paper describes and summarizes the geomorphology of the mapped area, which includes glacial, periglacial, fluvial, coastal, aeolian, lacustrine, and anthropogenic landforms that span over 680 km2 north of San Sebastián Bay in a sparsely populated semiarid and cold steppe used f…
Approaches and challenges to the study of loess—Introduction to the LoessFest Special Issue
In September 2016, the annual meeting of the International Union for Quaternary Research’s Loess and Pedostratigraphy Focus Group, traditionally referred to as a LoessFest, met in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. The 2016 LoessFest focused on “thin” loess deposits and loess transportation surfaces. This LoessFest included 75 registered participants from 10 countries. Almost half of the participants were from outside the United States, and 18 of the pa…
Human occupation strategies and related environmental-climate during the middle and late Holocene in central Pampas of Argentina
The main objective of this work is to generate and integrate interpretations of human occupation strategies and inferences of the environmental-climatic conditions in the central Pampas during the middle and late Holocene. We present a novel archeological–geological–paleoecological analysis in the area of the Cabeza de Buey lake, placed in an aeolian landscape. During the middle Holocene, two events of human occupations were recognized at Laguna …
Archaeological site formation processes in northwestern Patagonia, Mendoza Province, Argentina
The Cañadón Amarillo area in northwestern Patagonia (Mendoza Province, Argentina) presents a rich archaeological record contained within thick successions of fine‐grained deposits with well‐constrained chronological and stratigraphic resolution. Geomorphological, sedimentological, and archaeological analysis of three archaeological localities, constrained by radiocarbon ages, was conducted to reconstruct site formation processes and depositional …
A review of Late Quaternary inland dune systems of South America east of the Andes
The Inqua Dunes Atlas chronologic database
The INQUA Dunes Atlas project has developed a global digital database of chronological information for periods of inland or continental sand dune accumulation and stabilization. The database comprises information on the site location (including coordinates), dune type, and stratigraphic context, pertinent analytical information (e.g. luminescence procedures), and literature citations to the original data source. This paper discusses the backgroun…
Longitudinal Taphonomic Studies of Mammal Carcasses from the Rio Salado Valley, Mendoza, Argentina
Taphonomic studies aid in understanding the transition of organic matter from living contexts (the biosphere) to geological contexts (the lithosphere), and how agents and processes affect skeletal remains in the archaeological record. Archaeological research in the Atuel River valley, Mendoza, Argentina, has been carried out for several years. However, actualistic approaches to examine local and regional taphonomic processes have only been recent…
Geological evidence for a drought episode in the western Pampas (Argentina, South America) during the early–mid 20th century
Drought episodes during the early–mid 20th century were recognized and described in several places around the world, with extreme dry conditions and widespread landscape denudation, like during the famous ‘Dust Bowl’ in North America. However, there is scant documentation of droughts in southern South America, particularly from the Pampas, and none based on the geological record. In this article, we provide clear evidence of aeolian reactivation …
Late Quaternary aeolian record and paleoclimatic cond-itions at the distal Andean piedmont, southern Mendoza, Argentina
Late Quaternary paleoenvironments and paleoclimatic conditions in the distal Andean piedmont, southern Mendoza, Argentina
The Andean piedmont of Mendoza is a semiarid region covered by extensive and partially vegetated dune fields consisting of mostly inactive aeolian landforms of diverse size and morphology. This paper is focused on the San Rafael plain (SRP) environment, situated in the distal Andean piedmont of Mendoza (34° 30′S), and reports the sedimentology and OSL chronology of two representative exposures of late Quaternary deposits, including their paleoenv…
