As the COVID-19 outbreak has spread across the globe, it has brought significant changes to college campuses worldwide. College students have been heavily affected by the closure, as online learning has become increasingly common in higher education institutions. Using data colle…
A Longitudinal Historical Population Database in Asia. The Taiwanese Historical Household Registers Database (1906–1945)
For the past 35 years, the Taiwan Historical Household Registers Database (THHRD) has been significant for historical demographic research on Asia. Tianditu
Tianditu is China’s first state-sponsored web mapping service. Beijing considers Tianditu part and parcel of its burgeoning endeavor to build a ‘digital China’. The Chinese state created Tianditu to regain some of the ground lost when its monopoly on geographic information was effectively broken. This effort goes hand in hand with Beijing’s intention to compete with and shrink the space occupied by Google mapping services (Google Maps, Google Ear…

This report presents cartographic evidence of the government of the Republic of China's (ROC) change of attitude from denying to asserting sovereignty over the Diaoyutai Islands in the early 1970s. Scholars have hinted that China kept silent about the Japanese claim on the Diaoyutai Islands since its 1895 annexation. As cartographic evidence in this report reveals, however, the ROC did not keep silent. By not including the Diaoyutai Islands in it…
Mapping Taiwan from an alternative angle
Please click here to download the map associated with this article. The leitmotif of creating “Taiwan's East Asian Neighbors” lies in providing alternative perspectives of observing Taiwan that are absent in traditional maps. Instead of using a conventional Mercator projection, leading to serious distortions of territories at the mid and high latitudes, this map uses an oblique Mercator projection and tactful selection of standard lines to presen…
The Transition of Taiwan's Political Geography
This article reveals that the pan-blue camp has traditionally enjoyed a stable regional stronghold in eastern and certain parts of northern Taiwan. The pan-green camp was scattered but grew to form a considerable southern bloc from 1998 to 2000. Ethnic distribution can partially explain this geographical variation
