Wall‐to‐Wall Mapping of Anthropogenic Features in the Poiplie Region (Slovakia)
Over the past centuries, human activities have shaped landscapes in increasingly complex ways. Many historical anthropogenic features are now disappearing, making it crucial to document and assess their historical value to understand the formation, evolution and layered history of these landscapes. In the regions of Central and Eastern Europe, collectivisation of agriculture in the late 20th century and abandonment at the turn of the 21st century…
Years of changes and persistences in the historic wine – growing area of Svätý Jur (Slovakia)
Svätý Jur represents a traditional vineyard landscape located in south-west Slovakia. We mapped and analysed changes and persistence in Svätý Jur to bring additional insight into the development of cultural landscapes in Europe. We digitised a unique map from the end of the 17th century, and a set of historical maps and aerial images from 1783, 1858, 1950, 1985, and 2017. The area of vineyards has decreased since the 18th century as a result of p…
Degradation of traditional vineyards in Slovakia by abandonment and soil erosion
We evaluated the effect of increased erosion events and decreased management intensity on the degradation of traditional vineyards. The study area is located near Vráble, Slovakia, in an area with warm dry climate with mild winters, and Luvisol and Regosol soils. For the erosion measurements, we used the pole height method, which uses vineyard poles as a passive soil‐surface marker. The erosion of a tilled vineyard increased from 33.47 Mg ha −1 y…
Potential of airborne LiDAR data in detecting cultural landscape features in Slovakia
High-resolution Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanners provide detailed information on terrain surfaces, thus enabling the detection of the topographic signatures of historical anthropogenic landforms overgrown by trees or covered by the soil surface. This study aimed to examine the potential of incoming nationwide LiDAR data for detecting the cultural landscape features in Slovakia. We derived a detailed digital elevation model from LiDAR …
Historical land use dataset of the Carpathian region (1819–1980)
We produced the first spatially explicit, cross-border, digital map of long-term (160 years) land use in the Carpathian Ecoregion, the Hungarian part of the Pannonian plains and the historical region of Moravia in the Czech Republic. We mapped land use in a regular 2 × 2 km point grid. Our dataset comprises of 91,310 points covering 365,240 km2 in seven countries (Czechia, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine and Romania). We digitized thr…
Characterizing European cultural landscapes
Traditional agricultural landscapes in Slovakia
Faced with the disappearance and ongoing abandonment of traditional agricultural landscapes (TAL) in Europe, our primary aim is to provide scientific evidence of the importance of TAL in terms of biodiversity, cultural and social values, and to stimulate action for their preservation in the Slovakian context. Surveys at both the national and local levels have acknowledged that TAL are generally associated with a relatively high species richness o…
Physical accessibility and its role in landscape development—three historical analyses from South Slovakia
Physical accessibility is recognised as an important driver or factor affecting landscape development in an increasing number of studies. This work uses cost-distance methods for analysis of landscape accessibility, and presents the analysis in three historical time periods focused on the effect of accessibility on landscape development in South Slovakia. First, from periods when the cultural landscape was forming, the effect of landscape accessi…
Legacies of 19th century land use shape contemporary forest cover
The abandonment of traditional agricultural landscape in Slovakia – Analysis of extent and driving forces
Forest and agricultural land change in the Carpathian region—A meta-analysis of long-term patterns and drivers of change
Driving forces behind vineyard abandonment in Slovakia following the move to a market-oriented economy
