  • Three theses of the future as a Science, Technology and Society Studies research object

Open Access•Cristián Navarrete, Iván Ojeda-Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2026

In recent years, the future has re-emerged as a significant research topic, encompassing studies on perceptions, anticipations, imaginaries, and theoretical explorations of its nature. This article analyzes how the future is theoretically framed in Science, Technology, and Society studies (STS), and how this relates to its broader framing within futures studies. It identifies three core theses from research on futures that highlight shared ontolo…

  • From fragmented to integrated sustainability in lithium extraction? Political measurements and critical minerals in times of sociotechnical transition in Chile

    Open Access•Iván Ojeda-Pereira, Sebastián Herrera‐León et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2026

Lithium, a critical mineral for the global energy transition, has positioned Chile as one of the world’s leading producers through brine-based extraction. From this case, we identify a broader dynamic that we named “fragmented sustainability”, in which researchers and policymakers assess the lithium extraction through isolated environmental, economic, social and cultural dimensions. This fragmentation limits the capacity of sustainability science…

  • Opening the methodological black box in science and technology studies of the future(s). Shadows and proposals

  • Securitizing the technoplatformized City

    Open Access•Iván Ojeda-Pereira•ARTICLE•Digital Geography and Society•2025•References: 19

This article examines the intersection of digital delivery platforms, urban construction, and worker agency in Antofagasta, northern Chile. Drawing on qualitative ethnographic research, it explores how delivery platform workers navigate, appropriate, and symbolically transform urban space within the constraints of the gig economy. The study foregrounds the spatial and affective practice of socio-urban securitization through the creation of inform…

  • How should the socio-territorial density of tailings facilities be governed? A proposal for Chilean mining policy

    Open Access•Iván Ojeda-Pereira, Hernán Pezoa-Quevedo et al.•ARTICLE•The Extractive Industries and…•2025•References: 17

The article provides the first national-scale spatial analysis of tailings facilities in Chile using GIS and cluster techniques. • Two core zones of infrastructural accumulation and five distinct socio-territorial patterns are identified. • Each territorial pattern reveals specific environmental exposures and socio-territorial inequalities. • A critical review of Chile’s National Tailings Plan exposes three major policy gaps: social participation…

  • The Invisible Risks of Extractive Infrastructure Networks and Mining

    Open Access•Fernando Campos-Medina, Iván Ojeda-Pereira•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2025•References: 5

This article uses Actor‐Network Theory to analyze mining infrastructures in Chile and develop a concept of “extractive infrastructure networks.” Focusing on the port of Punta Chungo and its connection to the Los Pelambres mine, we explore how these infrastructures, along with human and non‐human actors, create networks that sustain the extractivist economy while hiding environmental and social risks. Through a photographic essay, we show how thes…

  • School and neighborhood selection as mechanism of socio-urban exclusion in Santiago of Chile

    Fernando Campos-Medina, Iván Ojeda-Pereira•ARTICLE•Urban Research & Practice•2023

We propose to study a set of biographical narratives about neighborhoods and schools’ selection in Santiago of Chile. Our argument holds that these family decisions have the capacity to transform institutional logics which are fundamental in the experience of urban integration/exclusion. In the analysis of 25 in-depth interviews, we identify three interpretative keys to explain these decisions: biographical disengagement, social retraction and po…

  • Mining tailings dumps and socio-territorial inequalities in Chile

    Open Access•Iván Ojeda-Pereira, Hernán Pezoa-Quevedo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

The aim of this study is to territorially link the distribution of mining tailings and multi-dimensional poverty at a local level. For this purpose, a database was constructed with governmental information regarding municipalities that present tailings, and subsequently, identified their levels of multidimensional poverty. The results show: (i) the presence of tailings throughout the national territory, although their greater concentration is fou…

  • What do we investigate when we research on mine tailings in Chile? An interpretative approach

    Open Access•Fernando Campos-Medina, Iván Ojeda-Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•The Extractive Industries and…•2023•References: 9

    Open Access•Iván Ojeda-Pereira•ARTICLE•Revista MAD•2022

This article describes and analyzes the labor process of Rappi, one of the main ordering and delivery platforms ( odp ) in Latin America. An exploratory qualitative case study was carried out and the results are based on the content analysis of 20 semi-structured interviews to platform workers as well as ethnographic work done in 2019–2020 in Santiago de Chile. This article contributes to, first, describe and analyze labor processes organized by …
