Is the boss watching, and are unions doing anything about it? Workplace surveillance regulation in Australian Enterprise Agreements
Enterprise bargaining provides an innovative way for addressing concerns about workplace surveillance in the absence of legislative reform. This article examines how workplace surveillance is being addressed in registered enterprise agreements in Australia, and discusses the implications of those findings for the regulation of workplace surveillance. This article provides the results of the first detailed, industry-by-industry analysis of the nat…
The Cambridge History of the Papacy
Throughout its history, the papacy has engaged with the world. Volume 1 addresses how the papacy became an institution, and how it distinguished itself from other powers, both secular and religious. Aptly titled 'The Two Swords,' it explores the papacy's navigation, negotiation, and re-negotiation, initially of its place and its role amid changing socio-political ideas and practices. Surviving and thriving in such environment naturally had an imp…
Distribution and classification of pockmarks on the seabed around western Scotland
Pockmarks are seabed depressions that represent primary evidence of rapid biogenic/thermogenic gas build up and fluid release from seabed sediments to the water column. We use a Geographical Information System (GIS) to analyse multibeam echo-sounder bathymetric data and use a range of semi-automated tools to map seabed pockmarks in fjords and adjacent coastal waters around western Scotland. We map 1019 individual pockmarks in 12 different hydrogr…
Re‐Forging the ‘Age of Iron’ Part I
The tenth century, once dimissed as an unpleasant ‘Age of Iron’, now receives increased attention as an important age of transition. Historians are attempting to understand how it fits into the broader narrative of Western Civilization. Some have identified it as the last act of the post‐Roman world. They identify its economy and social structures as Late Antique – at least until a ‘feudal revolution’ around the year 1000 suddenly swept them away…
Re‐Forging the ‘Age of Iron’ Part II
The tenth century, once dismissed as an unpleasant ‘Age of Iron’, now receives increased attention as an important age of transition. Historians are attempting to understand how it fits into the broader narrative of Western Civilization. Although some scholars have identified it as the last act of the post‐Roman world, others see it as a new age. Perhaps the High Middle Ages with its agricultural and demographic revolution, its new villages and p…
St Berardus of Marsica (d. 1130) ‘Model Gregorian Bishop’
The ‘Gregorian Reform’ or ‘Gregorian Revolution’ is a model of top–down ecclesiastical change that assumes that local bishops suddenly became, to some extent, agents of Rome. One striking illustration of this is the portrayal of the ‘new Gregorian bishop’, based largely on Berardus of Marsica (d. 1130), presented by Pierre Toubert in his classic Structures du Latium médiéval (1973), and now reprised by Jacques Dalarun (2003). This article, employ…

African rural labour and the World Bank
In the context of economic and technological change in the late twentieth century, the World Bank's World Development Report 1995 combines the themes of labour and the global market, celebrating the triumph of the market in efficient labour-allocation worldwide. The World Bank's emphasis on boosting Africa's agricultural export capacity ignores the prevailing hostile conditions which African products encounter on the world market, and the current…

Dinoflagellate cysts and Holocene oceanography of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean
Dinoflagellate cyst analysis of two sediment cores, taken on the continental slope off the western coast of Scotland, has revealed new detail and complexity in the oceanography of the Holocene. Changes in the dinoflagellate cyst assemblages suggest at least three fluctuations in the strength or disposition of the North Atlantic Current over the last 10 Ka together with a consequent change in the oceanographic regime of the northeastern Atlantic. …

Sebastiano Timpanaro’s piece on The Psychopathology of Everyday Life published in nlr 91 under the title ‘The Freudian Slip’ does not live up to the editorial promise of a ‘highly original stance’ on Freud. On the contrary, the article published amounts to a populist attack on psycho-analysis . . .
