The joy of intimability: Forms of intimacy and relationships among older couple-dancing adults
Recent academic debates on intimacy emphasise that intimacy needs to be reconceptualised beyond long-term relationships. This study contributes to such reconceptualisation by coining the term intimability and exploring its implications based on interviews with 29 older people about couple dancing in Sweden. We show that older dancers find great pleasure in dancing with others but carefully avoid overt sexual signals or forming obligations outside…
Openness, Distrust, and the Making of Belonging. How Intimacy and Belonging are Intertwined in Interpretative Processes of Single Male Refugees from Syria
The article seeks to understand how intimacy and belonging can be intertwined in how migrant men understand their situations. It makes the case that while connected to identity categories like gender and sexuality, intertwining of intimacy and belonging go beyond such identities. The article works with an interactionist-interpretative framework. Exploring lengthy interviews with two Syrian single refugee men in Sweden, one gay- and one straight-i…
He leads a lonely life: Single Men's Narratives of Dating and Relationships in the Context of Transnational Migration
This paper presents findings from a qualitative research project examining the dating narratives of single migrant men residing in Sweden and Italy. The study, analyzing 48 interviews with individuals from Syrian, Polish, Bangladeshi and Romanian backgrounds, along with ethnographic observations, employs a theoretical framework rooted in sexual capital theory and critical studies on men and masculinities. The analysis sheds light on the challenge…
Bridging the Divides? How Christian Faith-Based Antitrafficking Organizations Construct Co-Ownership in Buddhist South-East Asia
Religious differences are often portrayed as a source of conflict and tension in development work. Such portrayals imply that faith-based organizations (FBOs) struggle to bridge religious divides and construct co-ownership when engaging in multi-religious contexts. This article nuances this view through a study of how Christian FBOs are working with antitrafficking programs in Buddhist South-East Asia. Drawing on interviews and observations in Th…

Transforming Troubled Souls: Faith-based Antitrafficking Work as Therapeutic Governance
This article investigates how the problem of human trafficking is represented in the work of Evangelical faith-based organisations (FBOs) in South-East Asia. FBOs are prevalent but understudied actors in antitrafficking work, and more knowledge is needed on how faith shapes policies and practices. Drawing on interviews and document analysis, I demonstrate that the Evangelical faith-based identity of the studied organisations is reflected in their…
It is Who You Know: The Influence of Faith-Based Donor Networks on the Antitrafficking Work of Faith-Based Organizations
Faith-based organizations (FBOs) are prevalent actors in antitrafficking work, in part due to the substantial resources existing within faith-based donor networks. FBOs are often funded by churches, other FBOs, and individual donors, which make up donor networks partly secluded from mainstream development funding. Drawing on research practices and concepts from institutional ethnography, I explore the specific composition of the donor networks of…
Faith standing out? Discovering the particularities of faith-based antitrafficking organizations in Thailand and Cambodia
While there are some studies mapping non-governmental organizations' (NGOs) responses to human trafficking, insufficient attention has been devoted to antitrafficking responses of Faith-Based Organizations (FBO).To remedy this gap, this article surveys 59 antitrafficking organizations through the analysis of their websites, assessing their level of faith-infusion and mapping their antitrafficking strategies. To identify the distinctiveness of FBOs…
Waiting or dating? Migrant bachelors in the European borderscapes
The article presents results from an interview study on migrant bachelors and discusses differences between Bangladeshi migrants in Italy and Syrian migrants in Sweden, in how they present as singles. Interviewees articulate a simplified distinction between singlehood in Europe and singlehood in Bangladesh or Syria. Singlehood has been theorized as wavering between a period of waiting and a lifestyle with its own inherent value. In our sample, wh…
Friends against capitalism: Constructive resistance and friendship compliance in worker cooperatives
The article examines how members of worker cooperatives articulated friendship as resistance against capitalist work relations. This elucidates relatively unexplored links between research on workplace friendships and resistance studies. Based on interviews with members from small Swedish worker co-ops, the analysis shows that the co-ops hinged their friendships on authenticity, but also valued friendship explicitly for its economic and political…

(Re)thinking the Precarity of Swedish Migrants: Governing through Decelerations and Timescapes
This article uses the concept of ‘time’ in order to better understand the situation of precarious migrants in Sweden. Through analysing a number of reports and interviews undertaken with newly arrived migrants in Sweden, it displays how different temporal understandings of the migrants are linked to and managed by governing bodies, laws and regulations. The article centres around two related research questions: (i) What constructions of time are …
Norm-critical rationality: Emotions and the institutional influence of queer resistance
Norm critique is a recent discourse and practice in Sweden that is associated with queer resistance. It is taken up as a mode of governance in several Swedish institutions and companies. At face value, norm critique allows queer resistance to have a direct impact on institutional sources of norms in society. However, this article argues that such a shift in queer resistance replaces the queer emotionally overt subject with a rationalist style of …
Singles’ activities: Sociability and the ambiguities of singledom
As the proportion of singles grows in Sweden, the number of commercial and non-commercial activities catering to singles has increased. This article argues that these activities are situating singles within relations to others and to a community, and are becoming sites for performing and negotiating singledom. Using Simmel's concept of sociability, the article presents an analysis of two cases of singles’ activities in Sweden — a company arrangin…

On the basis of qualitative interviews with 33 older dancers and 11 dance provid…
Digital Media and the Order of Ethnography: On Modes of Digitization in the Museum of World Culture
The article applies and elaborates an Actor-Network Theory approach to digitization. Defining digitization as the determining of relations between new digital media and old materials within local networks, the article attempts to investigate locally engendered ambiguities of such processes. The model is applied in a case study of the Swedish Museum of World Culture and its attempt at renewing old ethnographic objects through the use of digital me…
