  • Linking Scores and Audio Recordings in Makam Music of Turkey

Sertan Şentürk, Andre Holzapfel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 16

The most relevant representations of music are notations and audio recordings, each of which emphasizes a particular perspective and promotes different approximations in the analysis and understanding of music. Linking these two representations and analysing them jointly should help to better study many musical facets by being able to combine complementary analysis methodologies. In order to develop accurate linking methods, we have to take into …

  • Predictive Tabla Modelling Using Variable-length Markov and Hidden Markov Models

Parag Chordia, Avinash Sastry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 22

Tabla is a sophisticated, centuries-old percussion tradition from North India based on timbral sequences. We model these sequences in a predictive framework with Variable-length Markov Models (VLMMs). Using a database containing nearly 30,000 strokes in 35 compositions, we show that VLMMs have high predictive accuracy, with an average perplexity of 1.80, and median perplexity of 1.19, on a task with 42 distinct symbols. This basic framework is ex…
