The Future of Higher Education
It is widely acknowledged that higher education is failing to meet the needs of students and employers, while educational costs and student debt are rapidly increasing. Our aim was to address these issues in an innovative fashion through a structured review combined with recommendations for best practices. Specifically, we aimed to identify and systemize failings of higher ed based on current scholarship, propose solutions, and identify instituti…
The Song Is You
Research suggests that musical preferences are linked to personality, but this research has been hindered by genre-based theories and methods. We address this limitation using a novel method based on the actual attributes that people perceive from music. In Study 1, using 102 musical pieces representing 26 genres and subgenres, we show that 38 perceived attributes in music can be organized into three basic dimensions: arousal, valence, and depth.…
The neurochemistry of music
Commentary on “Absolute memory for pitch
Ask the average person to describe how science works and it becomes clear that they subscribe to two pervasive myths. The first is that science is neat and tidy, that scientists never disagreeabout anything. The second is that a single experiment tells us all we need to know about a phenomenon, that science moves forward in leaps and bounds after every experiment is published. It is important to dispel these myths by doing just what Frieler et al…
The structure of musical preferences
Music is a cross-cultural universal, a ubiquitous activity found in every known human culture. Individuals demonstrate manifestly different preferences in music, and yet relatively little is known about the underlying structure of those preferences. Here, we introduce a model of musical preferences based on listeners' affective reactions to excerpts of music from a wide variety of musical genres. The findings from 3 independent studies converged …
Music Perception and Cognition Research from 1983 to 2010
in this review we sought to document the longitudinal course of empirical studies in the journal Music Perception, from the journal's first issue in 1983 to 2010. The aim was to systematically characterize the nature of empirical research in one of the principal peer-reviewed outlets for work in our field, and to consider these data as a sample representing the overall course of research across the last three decades. Specific domains examined wi…
Sensor Choice for Parameter Modulations in Digital Musical Instruments
This paper describes ongoing research into the design of new digital musical instruments (DMIs). While many new DMIs have been created using a variety of sensors, there has been relatively little empirical research into determining the optimal choice of sensor for control of specific musical functions. In this paper we attempt to identify an optimal choice of sensor for the control of parameter modulations in a DMI. Two experiments were conducted…
A critical role for the right fronto-insular cortex in switching between central-executive and default-mode networks
Cognitively demanding tasks that evoke activation in the brain's central-executive network (CEN) have been consistently shown to evoke decreased activation (deactivation) in the default-mode network (DMN). The neural mechanisms underlying this switch between activation and deactivation of large-scale brain networks remain completely unknown. Here, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the mechanisms underlying switchi…

Foundations of Cognitive Psychology
Foundations of cognitive psychology
Scientists from many disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, and neuroscience, contribute to the study of cognition. Cognitive psychology, the science of the human mind and of how people process information, is at the core of empirical investigations into the nature of mind and thought. This anthology is based on the assumption that cognitive psychology is at heart empirical philosophy. Many of the core questions about thought, langua…
