Care, repair, and the future social relevance of museums
This intervention reflects on examples of UK museum and gallery outreach and engagement activity that took place during the COVID-19 lockdown. This included creative packs sent to people who were shielding, online sessions for mental health service users, and phone services for isolated older adults, part of a range of efforts to continue connections while buildings were closed. Museums in the Pandemic: A Survey of Responses on the Current Crisis
Throughout human history, the spread of disease has closed borders, restricted civic movement, and fueled fear of the unknown; yet at the same time, it has helped build cultural resilience. On 11 March 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) classified COVID-19 as a pandemic. The novel zoonotic disease, first reported to the WHO in December 2019, was no longer restricted to Wuhan or to China, as the highly contagious coronavirus had spread to mo…

Patterns of accountability: An Organizational Approach to Community Engagement in Museums
This paper considers the divergent and often contradictory registers of 'community engagement' in contemporary UK museum practice. The paper draws on an organizational study of a large local authority museum service and focuses on how community engagement is constructed across a range of museum professionals who use it for different purposes and outcomes. I argue that different departments make sense of community engagement through four patterns …
Museums' community engagement schemes, austerity and practices of care in two local museum services
In recent years, geographers have paid attention to the practices and spaces of care, yet museums rarely feature in this body of literature. Drawing on research conducted with two large museum services – one in England, and one in Scotland – this paper frames museums’ community engagement programmes as spaces of care. We offer insights into the practice of community engagement, and note how this is changing as a result of austerity. Our focus is …

A double-take on reality television: Laverne Cox’s political and pedagogical gestural humor
Although Laverne Cox has become best known as a serious actress, advocate, and activist, her career was propelled forward by an appearance on reality television. While her participation in the reality television show I Want to Work for Diddy is usually only addressed within the context of representational politics, this article contends that her performance on the show demands additional attention, specifically her use of politically charged gest…

Developing dialogue in co-produced exhibitions: Between Rhetoric, Intentions and Realities
In 2012 many UK museums were involved in Stories of the World, a national initiative aimed at working with young people to revisit world cultures collections in partnership with originating communities. At the heart of this programme were the ideas of dialogue, co-production and youth empowerment. This paper examines the different levels of agency that are created when museums are charged with ‘producing’ multiple participation and dialogue. Refl…
