    Joseph Leo Koerner•ARTICLE•October•2023

He was always the youngest in the group. In 1966, the core participants in what he-with Valie Export-would later dub "Viennese Actionism" applied for government funding to attend the Destruction in Art Symposium in London. The group sent him, just twenty-two years old, to the ministry to argue their case. He remained their go-to spokesperson. On June 7, 1968, at the Kunst und Revolution event in Lecture Hall 1 of the University of Vienna, it was …

  • History, Metaphors, Fables: A Hans Blumenberg Reader

    Joseph Leo Koerner•ARTICLE•Common Knowledge•2022

Initially in college and then throughout my career, the writings of the German philosopher and historian Hans Blumenberg (1920 – 1996) have been my secret talisman, warding off the tedium of routine academic labor by conjuring, with poetry and precision, higher powers of thought. I read him first for his fabulous, inimitable German style, which blurs the boundaries between historical survey, philosophical meditation, and creative fiction. Then I …

    Tamara Morsel-Eisenberg, Joseph Leo Koerner•ARTICLE•Critical Inquiry•2021•References: 7

This article draws together two works created in late fifteenth-century Mantua. Although radically different in kind, they were borne from the same acts of violence: Andrea Mantegna’s Madonna of Victory and a responsum about Jewish religious law by Rabbi Joseph Colon. Mantegna’s altarpiece, painted to commemorate the bloody battle of Fornova as a Gonzaga victory, was paid for by Daniele Norsa; Norsa, a Jewish banker, was accused of destroying a p…

Iconoclasm has, of course, a more constricted meaning than the destruction of objects. As the word’s Greek root εἰκονοκλάστης indicates, and as the actions of seventh-century Byzantine image breakers attest, iconoclasm denotes the smashing of an icon (εἰκον) specifically, which is to say, of portrait likenesses of personages. Even within that narrower definition, however, iconoclasm vents its fury against icons because they are mere things that, …

    Joseph Leo Koerner•ARTICLE•African Arts•2016

During the last two months of 2014, the galleries of the Wits Art museum were hung with remarkable tapestries after William Kentridge's designs. These weavings looked custom-made for this space. Displaying twenty weavings along with preparatory and related objects—raw materials, mock-ups, cartoons, motifs cast in bronze, etc.—curator Fiona Rankin-Smith took visitors deep inside the artist's studio Figs. 1–2). • Introduction: Warburg's Library and Its Legacy

Anthony Grafton, Jeffrey F Hamburger et al.•ARTICLE•Common Knowledge•2012

In this introduction to a Common Knowledge special issue on the Warburg Institute, the authors argue that the Institute remains today - as it has been, in different forms, for almost a century - one of Europe's central institutions for the study of cultural history. At once a rich and uniquely organized library, a center for doctoral and postdoctoral research, and a teaching faculty, the Institute was first envisioned by Aby Warburg, a pioneering…

  • Writing Rituals

    Joseph Leo Koerner•ARTICLE•Common Knowledge•2012•Cited by: 1

This essay finds its departure point in a title page that Aby Warburg (1866 - 1929) drafted for his lecture on the Pueblo Indians. Through the labyrinthine thought pathways evidenced by this much-amended and overwritten typescript, it explores the relation between reason and mania in Warburg's thought specifically and in humanistic scholarship more generally. Composed in 1923 while Warburg was committed to the Bellevue mental sanatorium in Kreuzl…
