  • The elusive promise of universal social protection

    Open Access•Noëlle Burgi, Eleni Kyramargiou•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Purpose The need to alleviate poverty and achieve the United Nations (UN) 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Universal Social Protection (USP) mechanisms is a high priority for governments and international organisations (IOs). This paper focuses on the recent introduction of a general minimum income (GMI) in Greece, in the context of the international diffusion of governing expertise. It examines whether the “universal” scheme bei…

  • Societies without citizens

    Open Access•Noëlle Burgi•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 15

This article studies the chronic and acute anomic social impacts of the development of market societies in Europe over the past few decades. Focusing on the firm but linking micro and macro levels, it argues that the passage from the welfare state to disembedded markets and neoliberal governance has generated individual and collective anomie by depriving social actors of agency and voice while caging them in the disciplinary constraints of an ide…

    Noëlle Burgi•ARTICLE•Politique européenne•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 10

    Noëlle Burgi•ARTICLE•Mouvements•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 2

    Noëlle Burgi•ARTICLE•Travail genre et sociétés•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 5

  • Emotion as a dimension of ethical and moral motivation

Noëlle Burgi, Noelle Burgi‐Golub•ARTICLE•Innovation The European Journal…•1997•References: 8

In a world in flux in which the scientific certainties derived from earlier social paradigms are being challenged by the intrusion of phenomena not confinable within the bounds of ‘rational actor’ assumptions, the edge of objectivity of the social sciences is being tested. Emotion as a Dimension of Ethical and Moral Motivation grapples with this epistemic problem by arguing that emotion—defined here as ‘that which sets the mind and judgement in m…

  • Égalité, équité. Les catégories idéologiques des politiques publiques

Noëlle Burgi, Noëlle Burgi-Golub•ARTICLE•Politix•1996•Cited by: 2

Equallty, Fairness : The Ideologlcal Categories of Public Policy. Noëlle Burgi [47-76]. Forced to recognize the inefficiency and failure of all the technical measures implemented to curb the new (inevitable?) poverty, mass long term unemployment, and the «impossible task of reinserting unqualified youth into the labor force» over the past decade, the French elites could not remain indifferent to the country's social disaster. By the end of the 80…

  • État faible, pouvoir fort

Noëlle Burgi, Noëlle Burgi-Golub•ARTICLE•Revue française de science…•1992•Cited by: 1

Weak state, strong power : the British example How can one understand the Thatcherian "revolution"? Is it not paradoxical, given the political discourse (the State must be " reduced " ; " its limits must be pushed back ") and British cultural traditions that have always been wary of tha " strength " of the State ? An analysis of the reform of professional relations and the 1984-85 coal miner s' strike leads to a problematique which, by analytical…

What caused the Thatcher government to provoke the British miners and their union, the NUM, into a year-long conflict ? The authors first analyse the mechanisms which led to a break in the consensus within the mining industry about national energy choices. Then, through a detailed study of the strike and of the negotiating positions of both sides, they show why no compromise could be achieved. The strike has undoubtedly been a failure for the def…
