  • Women in corporate networks: An introduction

Stéphanie Ginalski, Erica Salvaj et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 63

This article is designed as an introduction to the Business History special issue, ‘Women in corporate networks’. To begin, we address the main theoretical and methodological issues. We argue that business historians should engage in greater dialogue with feminist approaches, by which we mean a study of the gendered nature of power relations in business networks. We show that network analysis can be a useful tool for mapping the gendered structur…

  • How women broke into the old boys’ corporate network in Switzerland

    Stéphanie Ginalski•ARTICLE•Business History•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 38

This article aims to contribute to women’s business history by linking research on corporate networks with research on female directors. To do so, we investigate the effect of the Swiss corporate network on the entry of women into boardrooms, and the effect of board feminisation on the Swiss corporate network and elites. We draw on a large database of Swiss elites, which includes board members and chief executive officers (CEOs) of the 110 larges…

  • From Quiet to Noisy Politics: Transformations of Swiss Business Elites' Power

Open Access•A Mach, Thomas David et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2021•Cited by: 18

During most of the twentieth century, it was possible to consider Switzerland a coordinated market economy, characterized by dense interfirm networks and the strong role of business associations. Thanks to their cohesion and collective organization, in a context of quiet politics and informal institutions, business elites could largely self-regulate major socioeconomic issues in the shadow of politics. However, since the end of the twentieth cent…

  • Who Runs the Firm? A Long-Term Analysis of Gender Inequality on Swiss Corporate Boards

    Open Access•Stéphanie Ginalski•ARTICLE•Enterprise & Society•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 7

The recent arrival of women on corporate boards has been extensively discussed in the literature. However, most of the studies focus on very recent times. This article analyzes the presence of women on the corporate boards of the largest firms in Switzerland across the past hundred years. It shows that until the beginning of the 1970s, the very few women sitting on the boardrooms belonged to the families owning the firms. Two main factors contrib…

Isabelle Lucas, Stéphanie Ginalski et al.•ARTICLE•Le Mouvement social•2019•Cited by: 2

    Stéphanie Ginalski, Christian Topalov•ARTICLE•Revue d’histoire moderne et…•2017•Cited by: 1

  • Si vis pacem, para bellum'-the construction of business cooperation in the Swiss machinery industry

    Pierre Eichenberger, Stéphanie Ginalski•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 16

This article addresses the historical emergence of business cooperation. We resort to Höpner’s (2007) concepts of organization and coordination in order to analyze how firms progressively engaged in Business Interest Associations (BIAs) and interlocking directorates during the first part of the 20th century. Our inquiry is based on a network analysis on large firms of the Swiss machine, electrotechnical and metallurgy (MEM) sector. Our results sh…

  • Elites in Switzerland: The Rise and Fall of a Model of Elite Coordination

Open Access•Felix Bühlman, Marion Beetschen et al.•ARTICLE•Tempo Social•2017•Cited by: 4

    Stéphanie Ginalski, Alix Heiniger•ARTICLE•Histoire & Mesure•2016•References: 2

  • Can families resist managerial and financial revolutions? Swiss family firms in the twentieth century

    Stéphanie Ginalski•ARTICLE•Business History•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 17

The aim of this contribution is to highlight the long-term evolution of family capitalism in Switzerland during the twentieth century. We focus on 22 large companies of the machine, electrotechnical and metallurgy (MEM) sector whose boards of directors and general managers have been identified in five benchmark years across the twentieth century, which allows us to distinguish between family-owned and family-controlled firms. Our results show tha…
