Healthy Food and Nutrition Offerings at Midwestern Food Pantries: Assessing Organizational Culture, Capacity, and Practices
Food pantries differ in terms of their commitment to, capacity for, and practices in support of healthy eating options and nutrition programming for food pantry users. We assess these differences in a sample of 476 food pantries in the Midwestern United States. Using survey data collected in 2021 from food pantry directors, we find high support for offering healthy food options at pantries, although there are some pantry infrastructure and staff …
Measuring place of residence across urban and rural spaces: An application to fears associated with outdoor recreation
Place of residence is one factor that may affect individual engagement and experiences in outdoor recreation. In this paper we assess four measures of place of residence and their associations with fears related to outdoor recreation. Data are from a statewide survey of Missouri households conducted in 2013 (n = 3,204). Logistic regression models are used to examine different measurements of place of residence and their relationship to the likeli…

On the Politics of the Politics of Origins: Social (In)Justice and the International Agenda on Intellectual Property, Traditional Knowledge, and Folklore
It is a great pleasure to read Valdimar Hafstein's essay, and I applaud the Journal of American Folklore for publishing an article that raises critical issues at the intersections of folkloristics, cultural conservation, political economy, and social justice. Hafstein's essay nicely echoes the conclusion of Peggy Bulger's recent AFS presidential address (2003:388) in focusing attention on an international debate and arena of great importance to t…

Landowner resistance to lease hunting: A sociocultural perspective
Lease hunting programs provide a strategy to address wildlife management on private land in a manner that provides economic compensation to landowners. This paper proposes a sociocultural framework for understanding low rates of participation in lease hunting programs by landowners. We suggest that the predominant emphasis on private property boundaries and the utilization of economic incentives inherent in lease hunting to promote wildlife manag…

Landlord Involvement in Environmental Decision-Making on Rented Missouri Cropland: Pesticide Use and Water Quality Issues1
The need to better understand landlord involvement in decision-making related to pesticide use and water quality issues is evidenced by several trends. These trends include the increasing documentation of water pollution by farm pesticides, the changing characteristics of farm ownership and operator tenure, and evolutions in resource policy and protection planning. This paper utilizes a theoretical approach to the sociology of land tenure to inte…
