“The Educational Outcomes of Violence: A Systematic Evidence and Gap Map of Research From South America”
Exposure to violence in childhood and adolescence is linked to adverse educational outcomes. Research from South America is underrepresented in evidence syntheses on the topic, despite being among the most violent regions worldwide. Attending to this problem, this systematic review characterizes and maps available evidence on the relationship between violence exposure and educational outcomes in South America. Using a preregistered protocol, we s…
A systematic review of facilitators and barriers to school staff development projects using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research
This paper is a systematic literature review (SLR) of research published between 2009 and 2022 that aims to identify facilitators and barriers to implementing staff development projects (SDPs) in schools in England. Twelve research papers fulfilled all inclusion criteria and were each evaluated as being at least medium‐quality research. The included research papers were analysed using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR),…
Interpreting rural change in M alaysia
Relatively little in the literature on rural change in Southeast Asia engages with M alaysia, where the population is becoming urban‐based more rapidly than in many countries in the region. The literature on change in rural M alaysia during the past 40 years, supplemented by our own research, is used to identify key features of such change, which are considered in the context of existing interpretations to arrive at deeper understandings of rural…

Grazing and Environmental Change on the Tarija Altiplano, Bolivia
The state of the physical environment is reviewed and the importance of grazing in complex rural livelihoods is assessed in the hitherto little studied Tarija altiplano, Bolivia. Past and contemporary climatic fluctuations have dominated environmental change and are reflected in landforms, soils, vegetation, and land use. Broad fluctuations of dry and wet phases, 200–500 years long, occurred between BC 1500 and the 19th century. Warming has taken…

What makes professionals so difficult: An Investigation Into Professional Ethics Teaching
Teaching ethics to professionals pursuing a university degree programme requires a method that engages them with the realities and problematic nature of their workplace environment. In this paper we examine some of the history of Professional Ethics from a philosophical and political standpoint. Unfortunately this analysis appears to produce more questions than answers with the terms professional and expert seemingly poorly defined. In order to d…

Post-Peasant Capitalist Graziers: The 21st Century in Southern Bolivia
Grazing elements in the household livelihood strategies of rural people in Tarija (southern Bolivia) are examined in order to show how they use a range of micro-environments in a sustainable way, how such strategies have evolved during the pres- ent century, and how grazing is intimately linked with out-migration. Grazing strengthens livelihoods and is easily integrated into the survival strategies of people living in what are evidently transloca…
Changed Household Livelihood Strategies in the Cordillera of Luzon
This paper identifies and discusses changes in land use and livelihood strategies in two communities on different sides of the Cordillera of Luzon, the Philippines. These include the abandonment of shifting cultivation on many hillsides, the growing of vegetables in pondfields previously used for rice cultivation and the deterioration of pondfield terraces as a result of water and labour shortages. It seeks some explanation of these changes by ex…

Fewer People, Less Erosion: The Twentieth Century in Southern Bolivia
Detailed investigations of household livelihoods in the valleys of Tarija, southern Bolivia, show how the resources of many different localities are used to provide a satisfactory living without necessarily reducing the stock of resources in the longer term. Historical studies of changes in the numbers of people and livestock show how land-use systems have evolved in recent centuries, and studies of river basins reveal the extent to which the fre…

Rural Emigration in Andean America
The pervasive and vital movement of population from rural areas towards urban centers, zones of colonization, or areas of intensive commercial agriculture, is particularly important in Latin America. Areas of high rural population density with low levels of living abound, and throughout the continent the rate of economic growth of the urban-industrial sector of the economy far outstrips that of the rural-agricultural sector. Increasing attention …
