Pain as a Risk Factor for Loneliness Among Older Adults
The results indicate that pain may increase the risk of loneliness in older adults. This suggests that appropriate pain interventions could prevent future loneliness, which in turn could prevent functional decline, disability, and premature mortality
Mexican Americans and Frailty: Findings From the Hispanic Established Populations Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly
Objectives. We examined the prevalence of frailty among Mexican American older adults and explored the correlates associated with becoming frail to determine their affect on disability and morbidity in this population. Methods. We studied the trajectory of frailty over 10 years in 2049 Mexican Americans participating in the Hispanic Established Populations Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly. We constructed a frailty index based on weight loss, …
Associations Between Positive Emotion and Recovery of Functional Status Following Stroke
OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence indicates the beneficial effects of positive emotion on health and general well-being in older age. Less evidence is available on whether positive emotion supports improvement in functional status after an acute medical event such as stroke. This study examined the association between positive emotion at discharge from inpatient medical rehabilitation and functional status 3 months later in persons with stroke. ME…
The Effect of Depressive Symptoms on the Association between Functional Status and Social Participation
Hypertension in Older Adults and the Role of Positive Emotions
OBJECTIVE: Negative emotions have been linked to increases in blood pressure, but relations between positive emotion and blood pressure have not been investigated. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that high positive emotion would be associated with lower blood pressure in older adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 2564 Mexican Americans aged 65 or older living in one of five southwestern states. Primary measures included blood pres…
Does Change in Functional Performance Affect Quality of Life in Persons with Orthopaedic Impairment
Neighborhood Context and Mortality Among Older Mexican Americans: Is There a Barrio Advantage
Objectives. We examined whether Mexican Americans living in high-density Mexican American neighborhoods experience increased morbidity and mortality compared with the rates observed among Mexican Americans living in low-density areas. Methods. We conducted a prospective analysis of a cohort of 3050 Mexican Americans aged 65 years or older. We examined prevalence of 6 medical conditions and survival over 7 years of follow-up in relation to percent…
Decreasing Variation in the Use of Hospice Among Older Adults With Breast, Colorectal, Lung, and Prostate Cancer
BACKGROUND: Utilization of hospice services has been shown to vary by place of residence and patient characteristics. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine whether such variation has changed over time. Hospice utilization is examined as a function of sociodemographic characteristics, geographic location, type of insurance, and year of death. RESEARCH DESIGN: This study used a retrospective cohort design. SUBJECTS: We used data from…
Disparity in Health Services and Outcomes for Persons With Hip Fracture and Lower Extremity Joint Replacement
OBJECTIVE: Examine disparity in health services and outcomes for adults with a hip fracture or lower extremity joint replacement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study examined 28,522 patient records including 12,328 (mean age 76.6 years) with hip fracture and 16,194 (mean age 71.8 years) with joint replacement. RESULTS: Non-Hispanic white and black patients were significantly (P < 0.05) more likely to be discharged home alone and responsible for the…
Examining the disablement process among older Mexican American adults
Satisfaction With Support Given and Its Association With Subsequent Health Status
Our results demonstrate that level of satisfaction with support given to family or friends or the community is associated with future health of the older person
The Association Between Emotional Well-Being and the Incidence of Stroke in Older Adults
OBJECTIVE: Individuals with high levels of depressive symptoms have an increased risk of many illnesses, including stroke. Measures of depressive symptoms include questions about the presence of negative affect, such as sadness, as well as the absence of positive affect, such as happiness and optimism. We assessed whether positive or negative affect, or both, predicted risk of stroke. METHODS: Data were from a 6-year prospective cohort study of a…
Emotional Well‐Being Predicts Subsequent Functional Independence and Survival
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether positive affect has an independent effect on functional status, mobility, and survival in an older Mexican American sample. DESIGN: A 2‐year prospective cohort study. SETTING: Five Southwestern states: Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. PARTICPANTS: A population‐based sample of 2282 Mexican Americans aged 65 to 99 who reported no functional limitations at baseline interview. MEASUREMENTS: In‐home…
