  • In the diaspora, not dead: Africa’s heritages in French museums

    Open Access•Herman Lebovics•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 2

There have always been pressures from within French society and from Africa for the restitution of items of African cultural patrimoine. Newly elected President Macron announced that it was time to return items of African cultural heritage. He appointed a commission to report what, how, and when. The article traces these recommendations, resistance to them, and outcomes. As of this writing, almost nothing has been returned. And the pandemic has h…

  • Biology and culture at the reinvented Musée de l’Homme

    Open Access•Herman Lebovics, Gilles Boëtsch•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 5

After being closed for renovations for six years, the ‘reinvented’ Musée de l’Homme reopened in October 2015 with a completely new layout and narrative. Its principal account is that, while biological evolution guided human development, culture must be taken into account. With this explanation it makes the new biocultural turn. Throughout, the permanent exhibitions insist that members of humanity, as we know it, are one, and at the same time we a…

  • Rashomon on the Mediterranean: Conflicting memories for creating France's future identity

    Herman Lebovics•ARTICLE•Contemporary French Civilization•2018

This study begins by evoking Akira Kurosawa’s meditation in Rashomon (1951) on the disparities of the stories told by self-interested participants in a highly-charged emotional incident. The article looks at similar contradictions, evasions, ambiguities, and even intersections of several narratives of how France’s cultural and political relationship to other nearby lands, especially those around the Mediterranean, propose what each speaker would …

  • The future of the nation foretold in its museums

    Open Access•Herman Lebovics•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 2

With the opening of several new musées de la société in France we gain an exceptionally rich and revelatory way of understanding the society-wide debates about what France is and what it should be in the new millennium. Each of the museums discussed offers pieces of the contested stories of a new France in a new age. Taken together, they ask whether it is possible, or even desirable, today to tell a single and teleological national narrative, the…

  • Building the History Museum to Stop History: Nicolas Sarkozy’s New Presidential Museum of French History

    Open Access•Nicolas Bancel, Herman Lebovics•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 2

When he ran for president in 2007 Nicolas Sarkozy promised to build a museum of French history. He declared that he was troubled by the lack of a coherent account of the nation’s great moments and great heroes. On being elected, he started the planning process, finally settling on the Hôtel de Soubise, part of the Archives nationales, as the site of the future Maison de l’histoire de France. Although his project was supported by a certain number …

  • Will the Musée du Quai Branly show France the way to postcoloniality

    Herman Lebovics•ARTICLE•African and Black Diaspora An…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 3

France has, arguably, struggled to negotiate its colonial history more than any other former colonial power. This article questions the declared purpose of the Quai Branly Museum to be France's first new museum of the twenty-first century, exploring its conceptualization, the complicated political and scholarly debates its opening triggered. The Quai Branly Museum wants to be a museum, but neither of purely art objects nor of social artifacts (mo…

    Herman Lebovics•ARTICLE•French Politics Culture & Society•2006•Cited by: 1

Designed by Jean Nouvel, the Musée du Quai Branly, the just-opened museum of African, Amerindian, Pacific, and Asian cultures, covers a city block on the Left Bank of Paris's museum row. Both in landscaping and internal layout, Nouvel wished to frame the building within his understanding of the cultures on display inside, but also within its setting in the metropolitan capital. Objects collected in the imperial age now are displayed in what Frenc…

The well-organized and well-conceived Fifth International Conference of Europeanists held in Washington, D.C. over the weekend of October 18, 1985, offered a set of wide-ranging panels which in various ways addressed themselves to two connected themes: the search for a third way in Western Europe between a discredited communist orthodoxy and a faltering social democracy, and, finding ways to deepen democracy from social relations to the shop floo…

    Open Access•Herman Lebovics•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•1986•References: 2

By introducing an economic cycle of a new sort in Europe the Great Depression of 1873–96 encouraged the alignment of iron and textile industrialists’ interests with those of the great growers and livestock raisers. The French version, perhaps best labelled the alliance of cotton and wheat, is the concern here, for since profits and sales for both agriculture and industry traced parallel curves, for the first time in French history, representative…

She could borrow on a massive scale from the accumulated knowledge and technology of already industrialized societies. Uprooted by the war, exposed to the full brunt of economic dislocation, and fearful of losing status in face of the growing might of big business and organized labor, the middle classes in Weimar Germany longed for a solution to their plight that neither the capitalism nor the socialism of their day could offer.
