Der Mythos vom Befreiungskrieg. Frankreichs Kriege und der detsche Suden: Alltag--Wahrnehmung--Deutung, 1792-1841
In the second epilogue to War and Peace, Tolstoy lays bare the sinews of his understanding of history. For Tolstoy, history happens in the confluence of will and necessity. Great men do not control history, and ordinary people do not simply cave in to its design. Instead, the people have their own opinions, interests and patterns of action. The good historian, it follows, does not just describe the heroic thoughts and deeds of Napoleon, but also …
Critiquing Models of Emotions
This article provides the first systematic empirical examination of four major genres of theories concerning the nature and rise of the corpus of human emotions with more than 2,000 statistical tests of five hypotheses. The distinction between evolutionary-universal and other ''secondary'' emotions is empirically uninformative for all five cultures. Next, the emotion-wheel theory of Plutchik receives no empirical support. All palette theories fai…

Introduction to the Special Issue
Social vs. Self-Directed Events among Japanese and Americans
Cultural expectations provide meaning to human perceptions of who-does-what-to- whom-where. However, the effects of actions directed at oneself have been much less systematically studied. This article replicates the American factorial design of Britt and Heise (1992) in a Japanese setting. The analysis demonstrates both cultural similarities and differences in psychological principles for attaching meanings to self-directed events. Cross-cultural…

The Politics of Abortion: Husband Notification Legislation, Self-Disclosure, and Marital Bargaining
Since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, numerous states have passed or considered laws requiring a woman notify her spouse before an abortion. These laws presume that substantial numbers of women do not inform their spouses of their intentions and that frequency of abortions would radically reduce were women so required. This manuscript discusses the major court decisions pertaining to spousal notification. Because expert witnesses give only sug…

Improving the Quality of Field Research Training
Can apprentice field workers be trained to be sensitive to their individual observational biases? Can these observational biases be altered to result in significantly higher data quality, reliability and validity? Results of an apprentice field worker training program using pre-training and post-training measures of field worker observational skills measured by responses to ethnographic documentary films indicates encouraging improvements in ethn…

Territorial Spacing on a Beach Revisited: A Cross-National Exploration
A naturalistic American study of territorial spacing on a beach by Edney and Jordan-Edney (1974) was replicated in France and West Germany using theoretical notions developed by Hall (1976). Some of the original Edney and Jordan-Edney patterns were found to have significant cultural variations. Larger groups, mixed-sex groups, and females tended to claim less space per person than smaller groups, same-sex groups and males, while some other patter…

The CB Handle: An Announcement Of Adult Identity
The CB handle is used as a means of exploring voluntary identity-making among adult CBers. While only an exploratory study, gender appeared to be the most deeply embedded adult identification. Other, apparently less deeply embedded, identities were found in occupation (white- versus blue-collar workers and truckers versus non-truckers). Sexual identifications seemed to have increased in importance with time, with ethnic identifications decreasing…
