Open Access•José Carlos Gomes Da Silva•ARTICLE•Proa Revista de Antropologia e Arte•2026

This article aims to understand the formation of samba communities as expressions of Black arts in the outskirts of São Paulo. Samba circles emerged during the military dictatorship period, when popular cultural manifestations in peripheral neighborhoods were under intense state surveillance. At the time, these expressions were often interpreted by academia through the lens of popular culture. Starting in the mid-1990s, new cultural collectives b…

  • Sounds of youth in the metropolis: The different routes of the Hip Hop movement in the city of São Paulo

Open Access•José Carlos Gomes Da Silva•ARTICLE•Vibrant Virtual Brazilian…•2011•Cited by: 2

In this article I examine different moments of the hip hop movement in the city of São Paulo. I analyze the intimate relationship of this phenomenon with urban segregation. I first discuss the rise of break dancing in the downtown region in the mid-1980s. I find that the themes and sounds present in the music of this period express aspects of the centrality of public life in the metropolis. In the following decades, there was a shift of hip hop t…

The city of São Paulo has been a source of inspiration for musicians of different generations. Important moments of its urban history were recorded in famous songs such as "Saudosa Maloca" and "Sampa", which good examples. This paper focuses on the representations of the city found in RAP music, an African-American music style that was appropriated and reelaborated by the youth from the outskirts of São Paulo.

Attention is focused upon the fact that such a study demands a new evaluation of the guiding concepts and principles of anthropology. While P.
