The World System and the Earth System
Livestock, Land Cover, and Environmental History
For southeastern Australia, arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 raises similar issues in environmental history as the 1492 landing of Columbus in the Americas. But Anglo-Australian settlement is younger and better documented, both in terms of scientific proxy data and historical sources, which include data on stocking rates that generally were light. Environmental concerns were voiced early, and a lively debate continues both among professionals a…
Locations and landscapes of paleolithic sites in the Semliki Rift, Zaire
Models of paleolithic settlement and site discovery in rift valleys are offered both to explain the settlement geography and to predict the location of additional sites. These models are scaled to the perspectives of region, landscape, and local resources. Paleo-terrains associated with stratified assemblages of paleolithic artifacts along the upper Semliki River, Western Rift, are described. Increasing degrees of environmental awareness, as sign…

Dating and Context of Three Middle Stone Age Sites with Bone Points in the Upper Semliki Valley, Zaire
The extent to which the earliest anatomically modern humans in Africa exhibited behavioral and cognitive traits typical of Homo sapiens sapiens is controversial. In eastern Zaire, archaeological sites with bone points have yielded dates older than 89 -15 +22 thousand years ago by several techniques. These include electron spin resonance, thermoluminescence, optically stimulated luminescence, uranium series, and amino acid racemization. Faunal and…
Prehistoric life on the Mississippi floodplain
Late pliocene hominid occupation in Central Africa
Historical Geomorphology and Geoarchaeology in the Southwestern Makgadikgadi Basin, Botswana
Arid landscapes of the southwestern Makgadikgadi, Botswana, are dominated by sandy lacustrine plains, which are veneered by grassy stabilized dunes and small evaporite basins (pans). In addition, the exotic Boteti River delivers a nearly permanent supply of water to the region from the Angolan highlands via the Okavango marshes. The history of this unusually intricate landscape was investigated through regional geomorphological and geoarchaeologi…

Late Cenozoic Paleoclimates of the Gaap Escarpment, Kalahari margin, South Africa
The Gaap Escarpment is a dolomite cuesta demarcating the southeast margin of the Kalahari. Since Miocene-Pliocene times, thick masses of lime tufa have repeatedly accumulated at several points along this escarpment, and four regional sequences are described. These allow discrimination of six major depositional complexes, commonly characterized by basal cryoclastic breccias or coarse conglomerates that reflect frost shattering and torrential runof…
Acheulian settlement along the Lower Vaal river, South Africa
Paleosols of the Southern Cape Coast, South Africa
L ~ATERITES and lateritic soils sparked what probably has become the longest and most obfuscating discussion in the history of earth science. Sources'of the confusion surrounding the word laterite can be identified in terms of two general problems with past research.1 The all-important problem has been the general failure to develop a functional definitional framework for laterite. Agronomists, geologists, geomorphologists, and pedologists have a…
Late Cenozoic Evolution of the Cape Coast Between Knysna and Cape St. Francis, South Africa
The southeastern coast of South Africa's Cape Province underwent complex geomorphic evolution during the late Cenozoic, leaving a variety of erosional forms and a detailed, complementary record of distinctive sediments. The latter include several new lithostratigraphic units and paleosol horizons. An almost ubiquitous planation surface, the 200-m Coastal Platform, is associated with the fanglomeratic and deltaic Keurbooms Formation (late Tertiary…
