  • Developing a social mobilisation intervention for salt reduction

Open Access•Kiran Cheedella, Peter Conteh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Social mobilisation interventions can provide low-cost strategies to tackle NCDs in fragile settings such as Sierra Leone through the utilisation of community structures. However, more research is required to ascertain the key enablers for replicability and if such successes can be sustained over a longer follow up period

  • Codevelopment of Covid-19 infection prevention and control guidelines in lower-middle-income countries

Open Access•Viscount Haldane, Victoria Haldane et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has required the rapid development of comprehensive guidelines to direct health service organisation and delivery. However, most guidelines are based on resources found in high-income settings, with fewer examples that can be implemented in resource-constrained settings. This study describes the process of adapting and developing role-specific guidelines for comprehensive COVID-19 infection prevention and contr…

  • Opportunities and challenges for delivering non-communicable disease management and services in fragile and post-conflict settings

Open Access•Sophie Witter, Guanyang Zou et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2020

Our study suggests that NCD prevention and control is of low but increasing priority in Sierra Leone; challenges to addressing this burden relate to huge numbers with NCDs (especially hypertension) requiring care, overall resource constraints and wider systemic issues, including poorly supported primary care services and access barriers. In addition to securing and strengthening political will and commitment and directing more resources and atten…

  • Process Evaluation of a Clustered Randomized Control Trial of a Comprehensive Intervention to Reduce the Risk of Cardiovascular Events in Primary Health Care in Rural China

Open Access•Guanyang Zou, Wei Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Our study suggests the feasibility of implementing a comprehensive CVD risk reduction strategy in China's rural primary care facilities. However, health system barriers need to be addressed to ensure the success and sustainability of the intervention

  • Decentralising NCD management in rural southern Africa

Open Access•Ashley Sharp, Naomi Riches et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

The findings suggest that management of diabetes and hypertension care in a rural district setting can be safely delivered by nurses in community clinics according to a shared care protocol. Improved access is likely to lead to improved patient compliance with treatment

  • Adapting and implementing training, guidelines and treatment cards to improve primary care-based hypertension and diabetes management in a fragile context

Open Access•Guanyang Zou, Sophie Witter et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Our study suggests the potential feasibility of this approach to strengthening primary care delivery of NCDs in fragile contexts. However, the approach needs to be built into routine supervision and pre-service training to be sustained. Key barriers in the health system and at community level also need to be addressed

  • Partnering with Private Providers to Promote Long-Acting Contraceptives in Urban Bangladesh

Laura Bates, Bates Bates et al.•ARTICLE•International Perspectives on…•2019

CONTEXT: Bangladesh's pluralistic health system has diversified opportunities for clients to obtain family planning, but public-private partnerships could improve access to services, particularly in urban areas. METHOD: Sixteen providers, clients and program managers were interviewed to assess perspectives on a family planning orientation and demand-side financing referral program tested in Mirpur, Bangladesh. The 15-month program, conducted in 2…

  • Antibiotic prescribing for upper respiratory infections among children in rural China

Open Access•Zhitong Zhang, Yanhong Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2017

BACKGROUND: Overuse of antibiotics contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the condition of antibiotic use at health facilities at county, township and village levels in rural Guangxi, China. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in 2014 for children aged 2-14 years with upper respiratory infections (URI). Open Access•Muhammad Amir Khan, Maqsood Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2015

BACKGROUND: Respiratory diseases, namely asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), account for one-fourth of the patients at the primary health-care (PHC) facilities in Pakistan. Standard care practices to manage these diseases are necessary to reduce the morbidity and mortality rate associated with non-communicable diseases in developing countries. OBJECTIVE: To develop and measure the effectiveness of operational guidelines and i…

  • Barriers to hospital and tuberculosis programme collaboration in China

Open Access•Guanyang Zou, Rebecca King et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2015

BACKGROUND: In many developing countries, programmes for 'diseases of social importance', such as tuberculosis (TB), have traditionally been organised as vertical services. In most of China, general hospitals are required to report and refer suspected TB cases to the TB programme for standardised diagnosis and treatment. General hospitals are the major contacts of health services for the TB patients. Despite the implementation of public-public/pr…

  • Early infant male circumcision for human immunodeficiency virus prevention

Open Access•Prudence Jarrett, Merav Kliner et al.•ARTICLE•SAHARA-J Journal of Social…•2014•Referencias: 9

Swaziland has the highest prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the world at 26% of the adult population. Medical male circumcision (MMC) has been shown to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV from heterosexual sex by up to 60% and the Government of Swaziland has been promoting adult male circumcision. Infant circumcision commenced in 2013 so it is important to understand the knowledge and views of women as potential mothers, around inf…

  • Improving adherence to antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan African HIV-positive populations

    Setor K Kunutsor, S Kunutsor et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2012

With the increasing access to antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan African HIV-positive populations, it is important to find additional simple, effective, and feasible methods of improving and maintaining adequately high levels of adherence. In this study, we undertook the development, testing, implementation, and evaluation of various adherence support interventions at four sites in Uganda. A one-group pre- and post-intervention design was empl…

  • Evaluating the impact of decentralising tuberculosis microscopy services to rural township hospitals in gansu province, china

Open Access•Xiaolin Wei, Guanyang Zou et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Microscopy centre throughputs were generally low in Gansu Province, and the contribution of MCs to TB case detection was insignificant taking account the number of MCs established. As a unique case of full decentralisation of TB service, Ganzhou County presented better results. However, standards and quality of TB care needed to be improved. The MC policy needs to be reviewed in light of evidence from this study

Janine Thoulass, Elly Katabira et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction Diagnosis in of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in resource-limited settings relies heavily on detection of bacilli on sputum smears however HIV positive patients often have smear-negative disease. A new WHO diagnostic algorithm was developed to improve PTB diagnosis in HIV-prevalent resource-limited settings (integrated, expedited pathway with 2 rather than 3 smears in each set and no diagnostic antibiotic trial). We evaluated performa…
