Belonging, discrimination, and risk in displacement: Bayesian variable selection in predicting mental health and resilience among refugee adolescents in Greece
Background: Understanding the mental health challenges of refugee adolescents is critical for informing targeted educational policies and interventions. Yet few studies identify which school-based factors most strongly relate to their resilience and well-being. This study draws on a multi-informant dataset from 170 refugee students attending school in Greece, applying Bayesian variable selection to identify key predictors of mental health outcome…
Safety, Health and Trauma among Newly Arrived Refugees in Greece
This study identifies factors that affect safety, health and trauma among refugees and asylum seekers newly arrived and accommodated in Greece. The data of this study was collected from the REHEAL (Refugees’ Healing) project—a population-based survey conducted in six Greek refugee camps during the summer of 2016. We specified two binary logistic-regression models—one for safety and a second for health—as well as a multiple linear-regression model…
Immigrant Remittances, Stability of Employment and Relative Deprivation
This paper examines the factors affecting immigrant remittances on the basis of the experience of immigrants to Greece. In addition to factors commonly used in similar analyses, we examine two new ones: stability of employment and relative deprivation. Our results show that the stability of employment has no significant effect on the decision to remit, while relative deprivation does. Immigrants from less relatively deprived families are more lik…
Labor Market Impact of Migration: Employment Structures and the Case of Greece
The impact of migration on the labor markets of host countries has fueled research and policy debates. While the impact of migration on the employment opportunities and wages of natives has come under extensive focus, another dimension of labor market impact of migration apparent in the case of Greece, the relations under which work is performed, has attracted less attention. The prevalence of family-based forms of production and the relatively l…
Migration in Southern Europe and the Case of Greece
In recent decades, the southern European countries of Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece have all undergone transformation from senders to receivers of migrants. On the basis of this common feature, they have been grouped together in recent discussions of migration experiences and prospects. However, as revealed in comparisons made possible by the newly available data set from Greece's first regularization programme, the migration experience of G…
Conjugal Power and Synchronic Differentiation in Productive Organization
Diachronic differentiation in productive organization is considered to have great significance for family relations. The transition from family-based production to wage-work is considered to have had important consequences for gender and generational hierarchies within the family and for relations with other kin. On the other hand, the significance for family relations of synchronic differentiation in productive organization has scarcely been exp…
