  • Scottish criminal justice

    Open Access•Gerry Mooney, Hazel Croall et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology & Criminal Justice•2014•Cited by: 7•References: 8

It has been claimed that paradoxically, following the re-establishment of the Scottish Parliament in 1999, Scottish criminal justice policy, hitherto more liberal and less punitive than ‘south of the Border’, became more closely aligned with London-based policies. It has also been argued that the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) Scottish government has, since gaining power in 2007, reversed that trend in a process of ‘retartanization’. Closer exa…

  • Labelling animals

    Hazel Croall•CHAPTER•Issues in Green Criminology•2013

Being humans, we do not live in a vacuum of the social realm or the cultural world, as if this territory is separated or neatly distinguishable from the biological terrain or the natural world. Humans’ lives are inextricably bound with those of other animals. Through a multitude of relationships with humans, other animals are interwoven in society, be it on occasions when their bodies are eaten by humans or, vice versa, when they are lovingly car…

  • Social Justice and Social Policy in Scotland

Open Access•Eddy Adams, Margaret Arnott et al.•BOOK•Social Justice and Social Policy…•2012

Social justice and social policy in Scotland offers a critical engagement with the state of social policy in one of the devolved nations of the UK, a decade after the introduction of devolution. Promoting greater social justice has been held up as a key vision of successive Scottish administrations since devolution began. It is argued throughout this important book that the analysis of Scottish social policy must therefore be located in wider deb…

  • Phantom fraudsters still

    Hazel Croall•ARTICLE•Global Crime•2010

Fraud, states Levi, in the preface to the original, 1981, edition of the Phantom Capitalists , is a 'Cinderella' topic for the criminal justice process and receives little media attention. This situation had, he argued, begun to change, and 'many conservatives as well as socialists argue that the government should step in to remove or least to perform plastic surgery upon the “unacceptable face of capitalism”', albeit that there are widely diverg…

  • Community safety and economic crime

    Open Access•Hazel Croall•ARTICLE•Criminology & Criminal Justice•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The contemporary focus of crime reduction and community safety policies on youth crime, anti-social behaviour and forms of conventionally defined property and violent crime excludes many hazards, in particular those associated with economic and corporate crime, which, despite their considerable impact, have a contested `criminal' status and have not generally been considered relevant to community safety. Drawing on work on the impact of economic …

  • Criminal justice in post-devolutionary Scotland

    Open Access•Hazel Croall•ARTICLE•Critical Social Policy•2006•Cited by: 7•References: 12

This article reviews recent major developments in key areas in criminal justice policy in Scotland, including the renowned Children's Hearings System, the role of criminal justice social work, the use of imprisonment and the implementation of antisocial behaviour legislation. It explores the extent to which the welfarist approach that characterized Scottish criminal justice pre-devolution has been challenged by the politicization of criminal just…

  • Criminal Justice

Jane Tyrer, Malcolm Davies et al.•BOOK•Criminal Justice•1996

This is an introductory text, providing an overview of the agencies that make up the criminal justice process in England and Wales, outlining their legal responsibilities and tasks, and the contextual constraints that influence the operations of the agencies. The book explains the legal and social factors that shape the operations of the agencies and the criminal justice system. It also identifies the policy issues and discusses recent policy ref…

  • Sentencing the Business Offender

    Open Access•Hazel Croall•ARTICLE•The Howard Journal of Criminal…•1991

This paper examines how one group of business offenders is sentenced. It is argued that both the seriousness of offences and the culpability of offenders are important factors, but that their effect is influenced by the absence of relevant information and the ability of defendants to neutralise blameworthiness. The status of offenders may be less significant than the general appeal of defendants to business values. The apparent leniency of senten…

  • Mistakes, Accidents, and Someone Else's Fault

Hazel Croall•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Society•1988•Cited by: 3

The treatment of the business offender in the criminal justice system has been an important theme in studies by sociologists and lawyers of regulatory, economic, or white collar crime. However, while regulatory enforcement has been the subject of much research,1 and increasing attention is now being paid to the questions of sanctions,2 less attention has been paid to actual court hearings. In general, offenders are assumed to be sympathetically a…
