Risk Factors for Childhood Leukemia: Radiation and Beyond
Childhood leukemia (CL) is undoubtedly caused by a multifactorial process with genetic as well as environmental factors playing a role. But in spite of several efforts in a variety of scientific fields, the causes of the disease and the interplay of possible risk factors are still poorly understood. To push forward the research on the causes of CL, the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection has been organizing recurring international work…

Panos Koutrakos. The EU Common Security and Defence Policy
The European Union has gone through a profound development as an international crisis management actor. It was only in 2003 that the common and defence policy became operational. Since then, the EU has conducted more than 25 civilian and military crisis management in many parts of the world. These are carried out in the name of the EU whose international legal personality has been formally recognized by the Treaty of Lisbon (Article 47 TEU). At t…
Why do health systems matter? Exploring links between health systems and HIV response: A case study from Russia
INTRODUCTION: Studies on the relevance of stronger health systems to the success of vertical programmes has focused mainly on developing countries with fragile infrastructures and limited human resources. Research in middle-income, and particularly post-Soviet, settings has been scarce. This article examines the relationships between health system characteristics and the HIV response in Russia, the country which towards the end of the Soviet peri…

Offensive Critical Theory? Reply to Honneth
Adorno once suggested that a commentator was almost invariably faced with the alternative sins of pedantry or parasitism. Of necessity my comments on Axel Honneth's discussion of Habermas' effort to move beyond a “defensive posture” and attempt to revive the practical intentions of critical social theory will partake of a little of both. My comments accept enough of Honneth's basic argument to follow the general outlines of his argument. Like him…
Praxis and Temporality: Karel Kosik's Political Theory
In Western intellectual circles the Prague Spring, to the extent that it is remembered at all, has become an item of nostalgia. Despite the appearance of a number of important historical studies, there is little evidence that the Czechoslovakian experiment has had an impact on Western social or political thought, even among the radical intelligensia. While “socialism with a human face” may be remembered with affection, theoretical insights come f…
The Concrete Totality and Lukacs' Concept of Proletarian Bildung
A truly critical Marxian analysis of society does not appear full blown in the thunderclap of a coupure epistémologique, leaving all previous efforts at critical reflection on the far side of the “ideology”-“science” opposition. Rather, as a determinate, historical negation of the self-understanding achieved at those moments of bourgeois social theory's most incisive insights into the limits of its society, it reaches its “new continent of though…

Critical Theory and the Sociology of Knowledge: A Response to Martin Jay
The Frankfurt Institute for Social Research has been revived in America as an inspiration for critical thought at the very moment when it has died in Europe as an institution. A successful reanimation of the ideas of the Frankfurt School will thus have to concern itself with the problem of acquiring a mode of thought, not with an exercise in academic nostalgia for heroic positions once taken, lively debates once held, trans-Atlantic migrations on…
Sociology as a Skin Trade
Can criticism be critical? In a society dominated by privatization, alienated and divided labor, hyper-subjectivity going hand in hand with mechanist objectivity, and/or possessive individualism (the proliferation of possible labels is itself yet another symptom of the malady), the power of critical analysis is constrained by the absence of a community through which criticism may evolve. Both potentially critical academic traditions and political…
