    Jean-Pierre Azéma•ARTICLE•Vingtième Siècle Revue d histoire•1990•Cited by: 2

The Militia, Jean-Pierre Azéma. This study of the Vichy Militia is entirely based on archives. The Praetorian Guard of the French State, first recruited among members of the War Veterans' Legion it mobilized up to 30.000 « revolutionaries » often of modest background. Its leader, Joseph Darnand, made it the worst tool in the « Franco-French war », the Gestapo's zealous auxiliary perfectly at home in the structures of the French State, even if it …

    Jean-Pierre Azéma•ARTICLE•Vingtième Siècle Revue d histoire•1989•Cited by: 2

The generational key, Jean-Pierre Azéma. This introductory article to a special issue argues that the notion of " generation " provides an approach that is almost always fruitful - and a basic explanatory key - to contemporary history. In this new approach, inspired by Max Weber and Marc Bloch, micro-analysis and the impact of an event, the basic element of the generational effect, are favored

  • From Munich to the Liberation, 1938-1944

    Otto M Nelson, Jean-Pierre Azéma et al.•ARTICLE•German Studies Review•1986

This is a vivid and highly readable account of the most complex and disturbing series of events in French history since the Revolution, which makes use of contemporary literature and films in addition to a vast range of more conventional sources. As such, it will become a standard addition to the literature on the Second World War. It provides an up-to-date, detailed narrative: from the false hopes of the Munich agreement of 1938, through the Ger…

  • Une guerre de deux cents ans

    Jean-Pierre Azéma•ARTICLE•Vingtième Siècle Revue d histoire•1985

A two-hundred year war ?, Jean-Pierre Azéma The hypothesis of rippling waves of games of memory, faults and replays, of the determining role of ideological conflicts, of verbal inflation in Franco-French wars of the 20th century seems stimulating and operational at the end of this voyage through history. But one must not jump to conclusions. A truce is not an armistice. Events since May 1981, the opposition's attacks against the new Jacobins in p…

  • Le parti communiste francais a l'epreuve des annees noires

    Jean-Pierre Azéma•ARTICLE•Vingtième Siècle Revue d histoire•1984

The French Communist Party during the ordeal of the dark years, Jean-Pierre Azéma. Recent French publications and yet unpublished communications to a colloquium held in Paris in October 1983 indicate the progress in research on a particularly difflcult and still very contentious period in the history of the French Communist Party : that which started after Munich (1938) and ended with the laun-ching of the National Front (1941). The Party's geogr…
