  • Psychosomatic Medicine and the Behavioral Sciences

    Jurgen Ruesch•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1961

Psychosomatic medicine is not a subject that can be scientifically delineated. Instead, the field is determined by the attitude of physicians who wish to consider physical disease in the light of the behavior of the patient. The correlation of behavior with physiological and pathological findings has revealed few if any causal connections, and the prediction of disease in the light of certain behavior has not been too successful. Instead, a host …

  • The Relation Between Electromyographic Measurements and Subjective Reports of Muscular Relaxation

    Jurgen Ruesch, JACOB E FINESINGER•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1943

Electromyogram tracings of the flexor and extensor muscles were made on a series of 37 patients with psychiatric and neurological diseases and on 10 normal control subjects while closing and opening the fist at the rate of one fist, every one, two and three seconds. The greatest relaxation values were obtained by measurement of the tracing when the time interval between the discrete movements was three seconds. One-half of the subjects reported t…

  • The Relation of the Rorschach Color Response to the use of Color in Drawings

    Jurgen Ruesch, JACOB E FINESINGER•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1941

A method is presented for the analysis and scoring of drawings. The results of the analysis and scoring of drawings were compared with the analysis of the color responses obtained on administering the Rorschach test to a series of 55 psychiatric and neurological patients and 5 normal control subjects. High color scores in the drawings (Series J) correlated with high values for the number of color responses in the Rorschach test. Individuals with …

A method is presented for the statistical analysis of the tracings, based on the measurement of successive spikes. The individual groups are defined in terms of successive maxima and minima and indices are derived which are used for the comparison of tracings. The index M (ra…
