  • Culture, or the Meaning of Meaning Making

Michael Ian Borer•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Symbolic…•2021

The exploration and investigation of culture is nothing short of complex since the term itself is used in many ways by both academics and lay publics. Symbolic interactionists and “fellow travelers” tend to approach the study of culture from the position of those who experience and practice it. That is, they focus on the cultural context of practices and interaction and often do so by illuminating the activities of individuals and groups in every…

  • Urban Culture

    Open Access•Michael Ian Borer•CHAPTER•The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia…•2019

Cities around the world are comprised of heterogeneous persons and ideas. The actions and interactions of people in cities are dependent upon urban dwellers' ability to live, work, and play near, and often with, strangers. This requires both a tolerance of differences and a willingness to accept and subscribe to overarching symbols, narratives, and rules of engagement in public places and spaces. Heterogeneity and the ways that urban dwellers con…

  • Being in the City

    Open Access•Michael Ian Borer•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2013•Cited by: 19•References: 32

Though urban sociologists tend to study the growth and development of cities, there is a venerable yet often marginalized tradition that addresses the embodied experience of urban life. Studies of urban experiences have recently begun to flourish due, in part, to the rise of sensory scholarship. Recognizing the connections between urban experiences and sensory stimulations provides nuanced ways to explore the actions and interactions between indi…

  • Religion and the New Atheism

Amarnath Amarasingam, Fuller et al.•BOOK•Religion and the new atheism•2010

The term “new atheism” has been given to the recent barrage of bestselling books written by Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, Christopher Hitchens, and others. These books and their authors have had a significant media presence and have only grown in popularity over the years. This book brings together scholars from religious studies, science, sociology of religion, sociology of science, philosophy, and theology to engage the new athei…

  • From Collective Memory to Collective Imagination

    Open Access•Michael Ian Borer•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•2010•Cited by: 10•References: 34

This article is about a place that does not exist, yet. It is about residents' perceptions of redevelopment plans involving the reconstruction of a defunct neighborhood firehouse. Interviews revealed the residents' 'collective imagination' as they actively envisioned potential future outcomes for a firehouse-turned-community center. When asked about the needs of the community, interviewees discussed the current conditions of their neighborhood (t…

  • Framing Catholicism

Open Access•Michael Ian Borer, Adam Murphree•ARTICLE•Religion and American Culture A…•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 10

In order to understand the practice of "culture wars work," we examined the claims of a particularly vocal evangelist, Jack T. Chick. Chick is a writer and cartoonist known both positively and negatively for his "Chick tracts." Chick tracts are small twenty-four-page black-andwhite comic books that attempt to convert the reader to Chick's particular brand of "Bible-believing" Protestant Christianity. We focused on Chick's claim about Catholicism …

  • The Location of Culture

    Open Access•Michael Ian Borer•ARTICLE•City and Community•2006•Cited by: 67•References: 23

The majority of research in urban sociology tends to favor the study of urbanization, the development and growth of cities, over urbanism, the way of life in cities. Here, I identify a strand of urban sociology that explicitly focuses on the latter and introduce a theoretical framework for investigating culturally significant urban places. The urban culturalist perspective consists of six domains of research:1) images and representations of the c…
