Critical Conversations Among Critical Race Theory and Narrative Inquiry Educational Researchers
Using intimate scholarship (IS), we had conversations about the intersections of narrative inquiry (NI) and critical race theory (CRT) to better understand their value in our racial justice research. Building on Stavrou and Murphy’s (2021) five design elements, which they applied to CRT and anti-racist education, in this article we begin by identifying differences between NI and CRT and positing the use of counterstories to uncover potential inte…

From Teacher Thinking to Teachers and Teaching
This volume covers advances that have occurred in the thirty year existence of the International study association on teachers and teaching (ISATT), the organization that helped transition the study of teacher thinking to the study of teachers and teaching in all of its complexities. Principles and Practices of Sociocultural Assessment
Increasing numbers of English as a Second Language (ESL) learners throughout the United States have created an urgent need for strategies that teachers can use to meet the needs of all students in their classrooms. Research has shown that effectively meeting the needs of second language learners requires appropriate goals for learning, standards-based curriculum, sociocultural pedagogy, and assessment that is coherent with these practices. This a…
Guidelines for Quality in Autobiographical Forms of Self-Study Research
The authors situate the origins of self-study in four developments within education: the growing prominence of naturalistic inquiry methods, the rise of the Reconceptualist movement in curriculum studies, the increased involvement of international scholars in teacher education research, and the re-emergence of action research and its variations. They focus on autobiography and correspondence (e-mail, letters, recorded conversations) not only beca…
On the Threshold of a New Century
Teacher educators are talking about and calling for educational reform from many different perspectives. To augment this discussion, the authors ask a cycle of questions that probe possibilities regarding the knowledge base of teacher education and the importance of a foundation of teacher education, and they consider the possibility of trustworthiness as a cornerstone for that foundation. The authors look to the potential of self-study for devel…
Comparing Theories from Textbooks and Practicing Teachers
The theories of student learning presented in four current educational psychology texts were com pared with those expressed by 38 cooperating teachers in discussions of teaching practice with pre service teachers. The theories in the texts differed from the teachers' theories in purpose, in language, and in major concepts. The texts focused on explication of the concepts in the formal theories of educational psychology; the teachers focused on ex…
