Inclusion of IMF in Eurozone Crisis Management
A new technocratic knowledge regime emerged in Europe in 2010. Known as the Troika, it included the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the IMF. The Greek Stand-By Arrangement was the IMF’s first Eurozone financial assistance involvement, controversial for both the EU and the IMF. We trace how the IMF entered the process, focusing on why EU institutions involved it. We used official documents, statements, and a unique set of 129 i…

Global movement dilemmas
Various social movement debates on organizational design have hinged on the possibility and political usefulness of devising post-representational, a-representational or anti-representational spaces. We analyse organizational options and obstacles that the WSF faces. A denial of representational dynamics may leave internal power and structural imbalances unattended. We raise the question whether the WSF process can intersect the current instances…
Eurocentrism, state-centrism and sexual self-determination in the construction of a global democratic organization
Based on conversations with and publications of Samir Amin, the article explores connections between his ideas on global political strategy and sexual self-determination. One of the questions is about struggles related to homosexuality in Africa. To what extent did he believe that some of the demands for sexual self-determination, including certain forms of feminism and LGBT rights, were so overly embedded in Eurocentrism that they were not fully…
Introduction
On all continents the enormity of the violence and danger of the times gives rise to multiple new practices of struggle and to conceptual innovations, which seek to serve justice, solidarity, and dignity for all. We explore the possibilities and different worlds intended in the main slogan of the World Social Forum ‘Another world is possible’. During its early years the World Social Forum was characterized by a fair amount of optimism. We know no…
Politics of Intra-firm Trade
Intra-firm trade is an emerging issue. One of its key elements is the international shifting of profits, for example, through transfer pricing that big enterprises use to cross-subsidise their subsidiaries, often to avoid taxes. Accounting rules conceal much of the information about transfer pricing, reproducing secrecy and facilitating the use of administered prices. Given the prevalence of administered price setting, a significant amount of int…
Representation Beyond the State
The crises of representative democracy and of state-based politics have been declared many times and ‘participation’ is often advocated as a remedy for the shortcomings of both. While the literature has extensively discussed representative practices in relation to territorial states, we argue in this article that more attention should be paid to the question of representation within transnational social movements striving for a politics that tran…
Occupy representation and democratise prefiguration
This paper seeks an articulation between Marxist and anarchist approaches to representation in social movements. A generalised dismissal of representational politics leaves power with too many places to hide and sets unnecessary limits to political imagination. Prefigurative politics should not exclude political representation, as the exclusion can imply a class bias. The paper explores two different paths beyond strict assumptions of horizontali…
Girls by the Church
In August 2012, pro-Kremlin media in Russia reported widely about an alleged attempt to replay the Pussy Riot stunt at an Orthodox cathedral in Finland. According to the reports, also reproduced by the Russian Foreign Ministry, a Finnish professor was facing several years’ prison sentence in Finnish courts for having attacked the cathedral, carried urine containers, spread homosexual propaganda and committed various acts of blasphemy. Even if the…

Global Crises and the Crisis of Global Leadership
This groundbreaking collection on global leadership features innovative and critical perspectives by scholars from international relations, political economy, medicine, law and philosophy, from North and South. The book's novel theorization of global leadership is situated historically within the classics of modern political theory and sociology, relating it to the crisis of global capitalism today. Contributors reflect on the multiple political,…
The Pedagogy of Global Development
This contribution uses insights from the field of critical pedagogy to study North–South power relations. It analyses the attempts of the European Union to promote democracy in the ‘developing world’, or Global South. The metaphor of development helps to reproduce the idea that Europe is more adult. It thereby assumes the social function of the teacher whose role is to instruct and guide the more child-like countries towards the path of developme…

Critical responses to neoliberal globalization in the Mercosur region
Thus far, the most articulate political theoretical response to the process of globalization is the theory of cosmopolitan democracy: given our democratic ideals and aspirations, globalization requires us to rethink the political community within which these ideals and aspirations can be realized. The problem of many models of cosmopolitan democracy, such as David Held's, is that they are partially detached from the real world historical processe…
The World Social Forum and global democratisation
Being anti-something can be politically useful, but only up to a point. The search for alternative globalisation projects has been central to the World Social Forum process. The first two forums, held in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre in 2001 and 2002, provided a wide variety of approaches towards global democratisation. This article analyses the contradictions and prospects of various approaches towards global democratisation that could be f…

Truth, Justice, and Legal Impunity
Dealing with past human rights violations has been a difficult issue in various Latin American democratization processes. Within the academic and political field of "transitional justice", similar questions have been asked in various countries in Latin America and elsewhere. Under what circumstances can perpetrators be prosecuted? When is reconciliation and pardon possible? Should truth and justice be sacrificed so that fragile democratization pr…
Towards a Democratic Theory of the World-System
A concern for the possible futures of the modern world-system has been a recurrent theme of world-systems analysis. There has, however, been relatively little effort to think about these futures in terms of democratic theory. In this article, I will explore some of the issues that need to be tackled to take radical and cosmopolitan questions of democracy better into account in world-systems analysis. In particular, I will point out some problems …
La crisis de las utopías nacionales en América Latina
Universalism and Ambiguosness
Theoretical discourses that emphasize difference, fragmentation and contingency have presented various challenges to the social sciences of today. The political implications of these discourses have generally been expressed in rather vague terms and often simply left unspecified. In this context, W. Warren Wagar's bold and provocative defence of the universalist values of the European Enlightenment is a most welcome contribution
