Enacting participatory democracy through futures making in the city
This paper examines how futures thinking can support participatory democracy in urban development. It does so by analysing the tensions and contradictions that emerge when inhabitants lead futures‐making processes. Grounded in a case study of the Badedammen neighbourhood in Stavanger, Norway, the study explores how inhabitants engaged in critique, utopian visioning, and collective realisation through an extended Utopian Future Workshop (UFW) proc…

A relational approach to the role of the state in societal transitions and transformations towards sustainability
The important role of the state in societal transitions and transformations towards sustainability has long been acknowledged. Yet, existing theoretical frameworks in the field remain only partially capable of providing the necessary analytical support to study this. In response, this article proposes a relational approach to the role of state power in societal transitions based on the strategic-relational approach to state theory as developed by…
Micropolitical practices of multispatial metagovernance in rural Denmark
Research on governance, network governance and metagovernance has shown how the practice of governing involves a diversity of actors in and beyond the state. Much attention has been paid to the role of powerful state and non-state actors while less consideration has been directed at less visible and marginalised actors who are recognised as participants but whose agency is rarely subjected to in-depth research. In this article, we address this la…
Performing Rurality in Online Community Groups
In this paper, we investigate how rurality is performed in online community groups, attending in particular to outdoor recreation and engagement with local nature. The starting point for our performative approach is that when places are digitally mediated, the technological intermediary is never innocent or neutral. Methodologically, we conducted an online ethnography in 20 rural community groups on Facebook during one full year, collecting every…

The translocal fluidity of rural grassroots festivals in the network society
This article explores the role of rural grassroots festivals in place-making processes associated with the network society. It mobilises dialectical notions of fixity and fluidity, continuity and change to produce a translocal perspective that builds on previous conceptual work by Manuel Castells–emphasising the space of flows and the space of places–and Greg Richards–focusing on iterative and pulsar events. From this vantage point the paper anal…

The Production of Alternative Urban Spaces: An International Dialogue
Alternative urban spaces across civic, private, and public spheres emerge in response to the great challenges that urban actors are currently confronted with. Labour markets are changing rapidly, the availability of affordable housing is under intensifying pressure, and public spaces have become battlegrounds of urban politics. This edited collection brings together contributors in order to spark an international dialogue about the production of …
