  • The New Cambridge Companion to Jesus

Open Access•Dale C Allison, Lutz Doering et al.•BOOK•New Cambridge Companion to Jesus•2024

The New Cambridge Companion to Jesus serves as the most up to date guide and resource for understanding Jesus' multifaceted legacy, enduring impact over time and space, and relevance in today's world. Integrating textual, historical, theological, and cultural perspectives, the essays, specially commissioned for this volume, also offer a fresh and diverse overview of Jesus' significance in contemporary global contexts. Key features include insight…

  • Seven Theses on Dogmatics and Patristics in Catholic Theology☆

    Open Access•Lioness Ayres•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2022

These seven theses suggest the centrality of reflection on Patristic theology for the enterprise of dogmatic theology in a Catholic context. Dogmatic theology itself is used here as an alternative to the modern use of “systematic” theology. In order to see why and how Patristic theology should occupy this place, reflection is necessary on the theology of tradition—and the continual authority of Patristic texts for Catholic theologians—and then on…

  • Scripture in the Trinitarian Controversies

Lioness Ayres, Lewis Ayres et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Early…•2019

This chapter considers how Christian thinkers in the fourth century engaged the text of Scripture. It begins by considering how fourth-century readers were shaped by the Church’s adaptation of ancient literary-critical practices in the late second and early third centuries. Then treatment of an extended example—the reading of Proverbs 8.22, and especially in Athanasius—enables us to draw out ways in which Scripture generated, bounded, and interru…

  • Nicaea and Its Legacy

    Open Access•Lioness Ayres, Lewis Ayres•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2007

It is a privilege to have the opportunity for such extended reflection on my book Nicaea and Its Legacy. No doubt some authors feel that their manuscripts are truly finished before they are published: I am one of those who merely abandons a manuscript to the copy editors when other pressures demand an end to hostilities. It should be no surprise, then, that I have always envisaged Nicaea as a snapshot of a moving landscape, not just in the ever-g…

  • A Response to the Critics of Nicaea and Its Legacy

    Open Access•Lioness Ayres, Lewis Ayres•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2007

Let me turn in this “Response” to the concerns of those who have been unhappy with particular features of Nicaea and Its Legacy . Although the bulk of my discussion will be taken up with the responses of Khaled Anatolios and John Behr, I want also to range a little more widely. For the most part, criticisms of my book Nicaea have stemmed as much from opposition to my overall attitude towards the task of historical theology as from opposition to m…

  • Nicaea and its Legacy

Lioness Ayres, Lewis Ayres•BOOK•NICAEA AND ITS LEGACY: AN…•2004

The first part of the book offers a new narrative of the fourth-century Trinitarian controversies. It takes forward modern revisionary scholarship, showing the slow emergence of the theologies that came to constitute pro-Nicene orthodoxy. Ancient heresiological categories, such as ‘Arian’ and ‘Neo-Arian’, are avoided while the unity of ‘Nicene’ theologies is not assumed. The second part offers a new account of the unity in diversity of late fourt…

  • Within-Case and Across-Case Approaches to Qualitative Data Analysis

    Open Access•Lioness Ayres, Karen Kavanaugh et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2003•Cited by: 70•References: 15

The generalizations developed by qualitative researchers are embedded in the contextual richness of individual experience. Qualitative data management strategies that depend solely on coding and sorting of texts into units of like meaning can strip much of this contextual richness away. To prevent this, some authors have recommended treating individual accounts as whole cases or stories, but whole cases are difficult to compare with one another w…

  • Not Three People

    Open Access•Lioness Ayres•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2002

Gregory of Nyssa’s small text On Not Three Gods has often been treated as a key statement of his supposedly “pluralistic” and/or “social” Trinitarianism. I argue, first, that Gregory’s intention here is to shift discussion away from a focus on the possible analogies between the divine life and three seemingly distinct human beings, toward themes more fundamental in his theology. Second, I offer a reading of On Not Three Gods to show how Gregory’s…

Charting the Chart—An Exercise in Interpretation(s) Suzanne Poirier, Lorie Rosenblum, Lioness Ayres, Daniel J. Brauner, Barbara F. Sharf, and Ann Folwell Stanford The multiauthored article is standard in the medical sciences, where the politics of the laboratory and the academy often loom larger than the singularity of the argument or grace of its execution. The following paper, however, depends upon the singularity of each of its authors and ha…
