  • The limited influence of climate norms on leisure air travel

Marianne Aasen, John Thøgersen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sustainable Tourism•2023

This paper adds to our understanding of how people’s climate change concern and norms influence their leisure air travel. It does so by examining the roles of Norwegians’ beliefs about climate change and emissions from air travel, their felt responsibility to limit emissions (personal norm), and expectations and behaviors of friends and family (social norms) in such travel. A representative sample of Norwegians was surveyed in 2019 and 2020 (N = …

  • Rapportering og formidling av risiko

    Open Access•Ottar Hellevik•ARTICLE•Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning•2021•References: 19

    Open Access•Ottar Hellevik•ARTICLE•Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning•2020•References: 13

    Open Access•Ottar Hellevik•ARTICLE•Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning•2018•References: 7

  • Margin Insensitivity' and the Analysis of Educational Inequality

    Open Access•Ottar Hellevik•ARTICLE•Czech Sociological Review•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 18

A problem in educational attainment research is that measures of association, and not measures of inequality, have been used to observe inequality in the distribution of higher education between classes. While the statistical association between class and education in many countries has been relatively stable, measures of inequality applied to the same data show a marked reduction of inequality in the distribution of higher education over time. T…

    Ottar Hellevik•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•2005•References: 1

The purpose of this research note is to outline an approach to Election Day polling, which has qualities that may make it an attractive alternative to the exit poll under certain circumstances. An Election Day poll is here understood as a poll where the respondents are asked about their vote in the election on Election Day, and a prognosis of the outcome is presented before the actual result of the election is known. This means that interviewing,…

    Open Access•Ottar Hellevik•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1997•Cited by: 26•References: 11

Major studies of recruitment to higher education find the association with class to be stable over time, and on this basis conclude that egalitarian reforms have been ineffective. In contrast, measures of inequality for the same data show the distribution of attractive positions to have evened out considerably. The difference in results is explained by how the two sets of measures are affected by changes in the marginals of the class-education ta…

  • Postmaterialism as a Dimension of Cultural Change

    Ottar Hellevik•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•1993•Cited by: 8•References: 8

The results of a broad, inductive study of cultural orientation in Norway are used to throw light on issues in the debate on dimensions of cultural change. Inglehart's index of materialism-postmaterialism is shown to constitute one diagonal in a two-dimensional cultural space with axes resembling those discussed by Flanagan. It is argued that they both fail to appreciate the importance of cultural differences along the other diagonal, opposing he…

  • Opinion Leadership and Political Extremism

Ottar Hellevik, Tor Bjørklund•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•1991•Cited by: 1

An analysis of a survey material with 14,000 respondents from Norway 1984—5 shows a U-shaped relationship between position on a political left-right scale and activity to influence others through personal communication, with the exception of a sharp drop at the extreme left. Various hypotheses attempting to explain this pattern of a left dip are tested and refuted: 1) it does not seem to be the result of sampling or measurement error, 2) it is on…

  • Do Norwegian Voters Discriminate Against Women Candidates for Parliament? A Rejoinder

    Open Access•Ottar Hellevik•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•1979•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In his article Foverskov claims that the sex of a candidate influences his/her chances of being elected to the Norwegian Parliament, independent of position held on the party list. This conclusion is due, however, to the lack of validity of his measure for list position. The lower election rate for female candidates can be shown to result from less favourable positions on the lists. Sex in other words affects election success only indirectly thro…
