    In the second half of the nineteenth century in England, white-collar occupations for women began to grow. A handful of women qualified as doctors.     John Grote (1813–66) was the younger brother of George Grote, the celebrated nineteenth-century historian of Greece. Entering Trinity College, Cambridge in 1831, he was elected Fellow in 1837.
