Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ) in European Countries: An Analytical and Econometric Approach
Despite the growing policy relevance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the European Union, significant uncertainties remain regarding the extent to which European countries perform unevenly across different dimensions of sustainable development and whether higher levels of economic development necessarily translate into better SDG outcomes. This study provides a quantitative, cross‐country assessment of SDG achievement in Europe,…
Mirandese in the linguistic Iberian continuum: Phonological data
The aim of this article is to contribute to the notion that Ibero-Romance languages form a linguistic continuum . From an intrinsically linguistic perspective, it is more interesting (and fruitful) to identify linguistic forms that vary continuously – and contiguously – across geographical and social spaces than to trace rigid boundaries between languages that are assumed to be essentially and categorically different. The former view can provide …

Beyond gender stereotypes: The missing women in print advertising
This study explores female representation in Brazilian print advertising to reveal who the missing women are (i.e. the least common portrayals) and how this lack of representation can hinder women’s well-being. We undertook a content analysis of 1,387 portrayals in 1,207 advertisements covering 20 years of female representation in Brazil and involving four dimensions: the female role, age, body type, and skin color/race. By doing so, we provide b…
Recent years have been fertile in new forms of collective mobilization and activism. In this context the digital media have been assuming a particularly important role. This article is based on an exploratory project, carried out between 2014 and 2015, which sought to study the use of digital media with the forms of activism and public participation of young people in Portugal. Methodologically this project took a qualitative approach, which soug…

Marsh benthic Foraminifera response to estuarine hydrological balance driven by climate variability over the last 2000 yr (Minho estuary, NW Portugal)
A high-resolution study of a marsh sedimentary sequence from the Minho estuary provides a new palaeoenvironmental reconstruction from NW Iberian based on geological proxies supported by historical and instrumental climatic records. A low-salinity tidal flat, dominated by Trochamminita salsa , Haplophragmoides spp. and Cribrostomoides spp., prevailed from AD 140–1360 (Roman Warm Period, Dark Ages, Medieval Climatic Anomaly). This sheltered environ…

Global citizenship and the ‘New, New’ social movements: Iberian connections
The past two decades have witnessed the rise of a new global cycle of collective action not only organized through the Internet and made visible during mass pro-test events, but also locally shaped by diverse organizations, networks, platforms and groups. Focusing on specific cases in two Iberian cities — Barcelona and Lisbon — we argue that this protest cycle has given rise to new kinds of movements referred to here as ‘new, new’ social movement…
