Changing food waste regimes in Africa’s transition to export-oriented production: The case of Tanzanian avocado
African nations are increasingly focusing on exporting high-value crops. However, a major challenge exists: high rates of food waste within supply chains. The problem is often seen as a technological issue—a lack of proper infrastructure and coordination creates inefficiencies. This research takes a different perspective, focusing on social relations within the supply chain. It uses the concept of “food waste regimes” to understand the underlying…
American Jews Face the Ku Klux Klan, 1865–2025
The hostility that the Ku Klux Klan exhibited toward Jews and other minorities (Blacks, Catholics, immigrants) has long attracted the scholarly interest of American historians. They have shown virtually no interest in the ways in which American Jews—either collectively or individually—opposed the “Invisible Empire.” It emerged in three distinct postwar periods—after the Civil War, exclusively in the South, by deploying violence to undermine the a…

The new achikumbe elite: Food systems transformation in the context of digital platforms use in agriculture in Malawi
The Malabo Declaration places the transformation of agriculture and food systems at the centre of regional and national policy priorities across Africa. Transformative change in the way that food is produced, processed and consumed is seen as not only necessary for addressing the complex challenges of food security and poverty alleviation, but also as a driver of new employment opportunities and economic development. As pointed out within the rec…
Role of the interaction space in shaping innovation for sustainable agriculture: Empirical insights from African case studies
The challenges of climate change, food insecurity and land degradation have all led to a push for ‘scaling’ innovation for sustainable agriculture. For this purpose, international agricultural development projects often use farm trials or farmer field schools as a way for farmers to engage with technically-constructed knowledge and empirical evidence. However, the role of such trials in the socio-political construction of knowledge is often overl…
Neoliberal ideologies and philanthrocapitalist agendas: What does a ‘smart economics’ discourse empower
Emerging as this era’s most prominent philanthropist organisation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) wield unparalleled influence over global development agendas. Their philanthrocapitalist approach seeks to apply ‘market logic’ promoting neoliberal economic policies to development challenges – from global health to agricultural development, and, more recently, to gender equality and women’s empowerment. We apply Kashwan, MacLean, and …
Why we should rethink ‘adoption’ in agricultural innovation: Empirical insights from Malawi
The challenges of land degradation, climate change and food insecurity have led to the introduction of conservation agriculture (CA) aimed at enhancing yield and soil quality. Despite positive biophysical results, low adoption rates have been the focus of studies identifying constraints to wider uptake. While the adoption framework is popular for measuring agricultural innovation, objective adoption measurements remain problematic and do not reco…

Resilience to climate shocks in the tropics
This focus collection on resilience to climate shocks in the tropics draws together 16 papers that predominantly examine the impacts of, and responses to, the 2015/2016 El Niño-Southern Oscillation event, in a range of contexts. This introductory synthesis contextualises the collection of papers by reviewing important concepts and highlighting some important insights that emerge from the collection. The papers in this collection collectively high…
Farming systems and Conservation Agriculture: Technology, structures and agency in Malawi
Conservation Agriculture (CA) is advocated as an agricultural innovation that will improve smallholder famer resilience to future climate change. Under the conditions presented by the El Niño event of 2015/16, the implementation of CA was examined in southern Malawi at household, district and national institutional levels. Agricultural system constraints experienced by farming households are identified, and in response the technologies, structure…
Can smallholder farmers buffer rainfall variability through conservation agriculture? On-farm practices and maize yields in Kenya and Malawi
Reduced tillage, permanent ground cover and crop diversification are the three core pillars of Conservation Agriculture (CA). We assess and compare on-farm effects of different practices related to the three pillars of CA on maize yields under ENSO-driven rainfall variability in Kenya and Malawi. Reduced tillage practices increased yields per hectare by 250 kg on average in Malawi under below-average rainfall conditions and by 700 kg in Kenya und…
The role of quantitative cross-case analysis in understanding tropical smallholder farmers’ adaptive capacity to climate shocks
Climate shocks are predicted to increase in magnitude and frequency as the climate changes, notably impacting poor and vulnerable communities across the Tropics. The urgency to better understand and improve communities’ resilience is reflected in international agreements such as the Paris Agreement and the multiplication of adaptation research and action programs. In turn, the need for collecting and communicating evidence on the climate resilien…
Exploring temporality in socio-ecological resilience through experiences of the 2015–16 El Niño across the Tropics
In a context of both long-term climatic changes and short-term climatic shocks, temporal dynamics profoundly influence ecosystems and societies. In low income contexts in the Tropics, where both exposure and vulnerability to climatic fluctuations is high, the frequency, duration, and trends in these fluctuations are important determinants of socio-ecological resilience. In this paper, the dynamics of six diverse socio-ecological systems (SES) acr…
Beyond Technical Fixes: Climate Solutions and the Great Derangement
Climate change research is at an impasse. The transformation of economies and everyday practices is more urgent, and yet appears ever more daunting as attempts at behaviour change, regulations, and global agreements confront material and social-political infrastructures that support the status quo. Effective action requires new ways of conceptualizing society, climate and environment and yet current research struggles to break free of established…

Weighing Up the Risks: The Challenge of Studying ‘Risk’ in Empirical Research
Studying multifaceted risks that are simultaneously and differently perceived and experienced presents significant challenges, but gaining insight into multiple realities and rationalities is crucial for achieving effective and collaborative governance. This article describes the challenges of a recent study that looked at how different actors, ranging from smallholder farmers to international biotechnology development projects, weigh up the risk…
Discourses of power: The development of small-scale hydropower in North East Scotland
This paper reviews the range of discourses associated with the emergent policies and practices associated with the development of micro hydropower in north East Scotland. It reviews the historic context in which water power was instrumental in providing power for a wide range of agricultural and wider rural processing activities, the explores the consequences of nationalised electric power production which led to the demise of small-scale hydropo…

Does Scandal Influence Voters' Party Preference? The Case of Greece During the Papandreou Era
The literature on corruption and scandals suggests that there is an unsettled issue concerning whether the public opinion of citizens is greatly influenced by reports of scandal and corruption. Recent developments in Greek politics provide an excellent empirical setting for the testing of how much influence scandals may have on party preference and voting. Toward the end of and after the controversial Papandreou administration in Greece (June 198…
