  • White Cube, White Culture, White Riot: Identity, Ambivalence and Non-Belonging

    Francis Frascina•ARTICLE•Third Text•2011

Marcus Harvey's portrait Maggie (2009), which was the centrepiece of his exhibition ‘White Riot’ at White Cube, London, 2009, and Steve McQueen's film Hunger (2008), are cultural reminders that mainstream debates about contemporary British identity are rooted historically in representations of Margaret Thatcher, Leader of the Opposition from 1975 to 1979 and Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. There are obvious differences between Harvey's and McQu…

  • Class, Conflict, Race and Remembrance: Adrian Piper's Black Box/White Box, Greensboro, NC, 1 November 2001

    Francis Frascina•ARTICLE•Oxford Art Journal•2005

Seven weeks after ‘September 11’, Adrian Piper lectured in Greensboro, North Carolina, to accompany her retrospective at the Weatherspoon Art Gallery. Greensboro figures in several histories including slavery, tobacco and civil rights struggles in the 1960s. Greensboro voters recently rejected proposals to fund the transformation of their Woolworth building into a Civil Rights Museum. North Carolina, part of the Bible belt and home to large milit…

This article examines how visits to two museum exhibitions in New York and an article about Senator Joseph McCarthy and the Venona documents in The New York Times Magazine, all on the same Sunday in November 1999, plunged active viewers and readers into revisionist debates about American art, culture and politics of the 1950s. • The New York Times, Norman Rockwell and the new patriotism

    Open Access•Francis Frascina•ARTICLE•Journal of Visual Culture•2003

Between 2 November and 1 December 2001, The New York Times reproduced five Norman Rockwell paintings, which had been digitally manipulated to evoke ‘September 11’ and its aftermath. These full-page adverts for the newspaper were signifiers of revisionist cultural values, selective sentiment, familial security, and particular visions of the nation-state. This article explores the images as: expressions of mourning, trauma and the new patriotism; a…

  • Inventing and Sustaining a Visible Resistance

    Open Access•Francis Frascina•ARTICLE•Peace Review•2003

In the New Yorker, dated September 24, 2001, Susan Sontag identified a disconnection between “last Tuesday’s monstrous dose of reality” and the “unanimity of the sanctimonious, reality-concealing rhetoric spouted by American officials and media commentators” in the days after September 11. For artists, writers, and intellectuals who encountered a blizzard of expressions produced by media spectacle and government narratives, there were struggles t…

There were several issues which paradoxically united representatives of the Old Left with those agents of corporate USA who subscribed to an official modernist culture, as represented by museums, such as MoMA, and a 'free press', however compromised, as represented by Walter Cronkite and CBS news. One of these issues was a fear of losing what were perceived as liberaldemocratic gains in culture and education if 'left-wing' protesters, with 'an in…
