  • Which comes first, organizational culture or performance? A longitudinal study of causal priority with automobile dealerships

    Open Access•Anthony S Boyce, Levi R G Nieminen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 16

Prior research supports a link between organizational culture and performance but generally falls short of establishing causality or determining the direction of a culture–performance (C‐P) relationship. Using data collected from 95 franchise automobile dealerships over 6 years, we studied longitudinal culture–performance relationships to determine whether culture or performance has causal priority, or alternatively, whether a reciprocal relation…

  • Do consistent corporate cultures have better business performance? Exploring the interaction effects

    Open Access•Lindsey M Kotrba, Michael A Gillespie et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 38

Past research has shown a close connection between organizational culture and effectiveness, but nearly all of this research has examined the direct effects of culture on performance outcomes. In contrast, this article examines the idea that the effects of cultural consistency on organizational performance may differ depending on the levels of other culture traits. Data from 88,879 individuals in 137 public companies using the Denison Organizatio…

  • Paradox and Performance: Toward a Theory of Behavioral Complexity in Managerial Leadership

Daniel R Denison, Robert Hooijberg et al.•ARTICLE•Organization Science•1995

The concept of paradox has received increasing attention in the study of leadership, but these new ideas have not yet had much influence on empirical leadership research. This paper examines the development of these ideas in the literature and attempts to clarify what influence they might have on empirical research. One general implication of the paradox perspective, that more effective leaders generally display a more complex and varied set of b…

  • Toward a Theory of Organizational Culture and Effectiveness

Daniel R Denison, Aneil Mishra et al.•ARTICLE•Organization Science•1995

This paper develops a model of organizational culture and effectiveness based on four traits of organizational cultures; involvement, consistency, adaptability, and mission. These traits are examined through two linked studies: In the first, qualitative case studies of five firms are used to identify the traits and the nature of their linkage to effectiveness; In the second, a quantitative study provides an exploratory analysis of CEO perceptions…

  • Modeling Distance Structures in Consumer Research: Scale Versus Order in Validity Assessment

Daniel R Denison, Claes Fornell•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•1990

Confirmatory multidimensional scaling (CMDS) is presented as a spatial technique for structural modeling based on ordinal assumptions, and as an alternative to metric techniques such as LISREL. The article links both techniques to the multitrait-multimethod matrix and presents a system for deriving measures of symmetric construct relationships, measurement error, and goodness of fit. Examples show that CMDS and LISREL often give comparable result…

  • Stepwise Regression in Social and Psychological Research

    Open Access•Douglas A Henderson, Daniel R Denison•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

Researchers often invoke stepwise ordinary least squares regression to explain, predict or classify practical problems or theoretical constructs in psychological and social research. Unfortunately, this statistical technique is used without proper consideration for its inherent theoretical and practical limitations, a problem expected to grow even more serious with the proliferation of statistical packages for use on personal computers. Use of st…

  • Creating New Technology-based Organizations: A System Dynamics Model

    Open Access•Stuart L Hart, Daniel R Denison•ARTICLE•Review of Policy Research•1987•Cited by: 4•References: 23

While the study of mature organizations and bureaucracies is well established, there has been comparatively little examination of the creation and development of new organizations. What work has been done is highly fragmented, primarily by discipline, and concentrates on different facets of a complex phenomenon. Following a literature review and classification this article attempts a conceptual integration; it proposes a system dynamics model for…

  • Multidimensional Scaling And Structural Equation Modeling: A Comparison Of Multivariate Techniques For Theory Testing

    Daniel R Denison•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1982

A "causal modeling" technique, structural equation modeling, is applied in conjunction with a recently developed multidimensional scaling technique, CMDA (Borg and Lingoes, 1980). CMDA (Constrained Monotone Distance Analysis) allows one to place theoretically-derived constraints on a multidimensional scaling solution, and to evaluate both measurement and theory through a series of "regional hypotheses" (Lingoes, 1980). These alternative methods a…
