Juliane House: Translation.
Juliane House’s book goes a long way towards meeting the aims and purpose expressed by the series editor H. G. Widdowson: “to support the more academically oriented introductions to linguistics”. Her book, Translation is highly accessible for students and language professionals who are interested in gaining initial insight into what translation entails both in itself, and as an area of study. The book is clear in its layout and structure and stro…
How Bridget Was Framed: The Irish Domestic in Early American Cinema, 1895–1917
This article explores the form and function of the Bridget stereotype in pre-classical American cinema. It argues that the character of the unruly Irish maid—a grotesque inversion of nineteenth-century domestic and feminine norms—was a cipher for underlying tensions at the heart of the new urban middle-class family

Brazil and Lula, 2005: Crisis, corruption and change in political perspective
The election of Lula (Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva) as president of Brazil in October 2002 broke new ground: for the first time in Latin America a working man was directly elected as president of the Republic. Lula also came to power as leader of the Partido dos Trabalhadores, the Workers' Party, with its close links to 'new unionism', 'liberation theology' and mass social movements. The possibility of his election caused strong market reaction but,…
Skopos theory: An ethnographic enquiry
In this article, the ‘relevant factors’ of Skopos Theory are discussed and contrasted with the findings of an ethnographic study of literary translators in the Netherlands and Belgium. The findings are based on a qualitative data analysis of in‐depth interviews with twelve translators of Irish poetry. Hans Vermeer's Skopos theory (2000) treats translation as a form of (social) action (see also Justa Holz‐Manttari 1984) in which a number of ‘relev…

Brazil: The politics of crisis
The re-election of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso in October 1998 coincided with the onset of a severe financial crisis in Brazil. That crisis, to which Cardoso's re-election was partly a response, has worsened since he formally reassumed office on 1 January 1999, despite the government's Programme of Fiscal Stability and a massive IMF-led rescue package. This article is based on research in Brazil from September to November 1998. It argues …

Collor, Corruption and Crisis: Time for Reflection
The scandal involving President Fernando Collor de Mello, leading to his last-minute resignation on 29 December 1992, provoked understandable heart-searching in Brazil. This was clearly evident in a series of research interviews, which I held from August to October, when the political crisis was fast coming to a head, and already was reflected in published analyses of the P. C. Farias/Collor affair

The Disciplinary Emergence of Bioethics and Bioethics Committees: Moral Ordering and its Legitimation
In this paper the processes of moral ordering are explored by examining the emergence of bioethics and the practices of bioethics committees. New morals emerge through negotiations by various interest groups. Consequently, the moral and social boundaries of ethical arrangements are continuously shifting and are shaped by the groups participating in any specific ordering situations. In this paper the interactive processes of medicine, law and exis…

Brazil: Authoritarianism and Class Control
One of the most striking features of recent writing on comparative politics, especially the debate on underdevelopment, is the contribution made by Latin American theorists. Living in societies so strongly characterized by a culture of dependency, they have energetically developed and refined the theory of dependency. Directly experiencing the impact of imperialism and imperialism, they have carefully scrutinized and reassessed theories of imperi…
