Hostility and anomie: Links to preterm delivery subtypes and ambulatory blood pressure at mid-pregnancy
Escaping the stigma, is there hope for obese adolescents
Adolescents are teased and stigmatized for having a deviant body size which leads to a poor body image as the adolescent becomes an adult. Society defines which personal and physical traits are acceptable, and which are deviant for the general population. Today, persons with invisible stigmas, such as mental patients, escape the consequences of stigma as long as they keep the condition hidden from others. However for persons with visible stigmas …
Peer acceptance of obese youth: A way to improve weight control efforts
Not all young people who are overweight are stigmatized, and most overweight youth have a small group of their own friends. Perceptions and attitudes of average weight youth toward overweight peers were investigated to learn how obesity might stigmatize adolescents. A qualitative approach was used to capture youth's attitudes in‐depth and to avoid “silly” responses to this sensitive topic. Youth (n = 56), ages 11–15 years, were paid $5.00 each up…
Biosocial variances and infant survival: A path analysis approach
This study used path analysis to assess the chances of survival of babies in a neonatal intensive care unit in Lansing, Michigan, USA. Two paths to neonatal survival were identified and the variables accounted for 20% of the variance in gestational age. The first path showed that prior infant losses were negatively correlated with gestational age while in the second path, gestational age showed negative relationships with pre-pregnancy weight and…

The need to know: Recalled adolescent sources of sexual and contraceptive information and sexual behavior
Most studies of college students' recall of adolescent sources of sexual and contraceptive information have focused on the identification of sources and have not been concerned with the utility of the information. This study is concerned with the perceived utility of sexual and contraceptive information obtained from various sources during high school and the relationship between the usefulness of the information obtained from the sources and sex…

Coital Experience and Definition of Masculinity and Femininity by College Students
Recent changes in sexual behavior of unmarried college students raise the question as to whether or not they are accompanied by changes in conceptions of masculinity and femininity on the part of the students. Changes in conceptions of masculinity and femininity might be the consequence of differential selection into coital activity or of new role learning by those who are coitally active. Data are presented from a study of sexual behavior of 823…

Malnutrition, learning, and behavior
This paper critically reviews the reported relationships between malnutrition and learning. Since malnutrition is not randomly distributed in the social system, the relationships between malnutrition and intellectual development are often confounded by the relationship between social class and malnutrition. The psychological consequences of malnutrition which have been reported are similar to those for social isolation among infants, and isolatio…
Public Attitudes Toward Welfare
This paper describes a study that investigated the attitudes toward welfare among a sample of three hundred black and three hundred white women living in Baltimore in 1964. Besides welfare, four correlative scales tapped political conservatism, antiblack attitudes, authoritarianism, and alienation. Both groups agreed that able-bodied people should work and sexual misbehavior should not be supported by welfare. Among the correlative attitudes, ant…
