Global Tantra: Religion, Science, and Nationalism in Colonial Modernity
Reflecting on the Breadth and Depth of the Field of Religious Studies: My Eight Years Serving as an Editor for Religious Studies Review
It is now generally understood that the field of religious studies is a truly interdisciplinary field. The tensions between the fields of theology and religious studies that plagued departments of Religion, Religious Studies and Theology in the 1970s and 1980s following the rise of Religious Studies as an academic field have thankfully waned. It waned as it should have, given that Religious Studies is not a unitary field. Rather, it is an incredi…
Searching for the Body: A Contemporary Perspective on Tibetan Buddhist Tantra
Conjuring the Buddha: Ritual Manuals in Early Tantric Buddhism
Over the past twenty years, Jacob P. Dalton has made significant contributions to the study of Tibetan Buddhist tantric literature. Working initially from the trove of Tibetan tantric Buddhist manuscripts preserved at Dunhuang, Dalton expanded to explore the tantras transmitted during the early dissemination (snga dar) of Buddhism in Tibet and the origin narratives preserved within this literature. In Conjuring the Buddha, Dalton builds upon his …
The Cakrasaṃvara Tantra
The Cakrasaṃvara Tantra is a short but influential work in the Buddhist Yoginītantra genre and is considered the fundamental scripture (mūlatantra, “root tantra”) of what came to be one of the main practice traditions in this genre. It is a cryptic and somewhat obscure text that has a complicated textual history. It came to be seen as the basis of an important practice tradition, which ensured its continued influence until the present day. This p…

Bodies of Knowledge: Bodily Perfection in Tantric Buddhist Practice
This essay explores conflicting attitudes toward the body in Buddhist literature, with a focus on the tantric Buddhist traditions of yoga and meditation, which advanced the notion that the body was an innately pure site for realization while nonetheless still encumbered with earlier notions of the body as an impure obstacle to be overcome. Looking closely at a short meditation text attributed to the female Indian saints Mekhalā and Kanakhalā, the…
The Visualization of the Secret: Atiśa's Contribution to the Internalization of Tantric Sexual Practices
This essay will explore the challenges presented by transgressive rituals, particularly the secret and wisdom-consort consecrations found in the Mahāyoga and Yoginī tantras. In particular, it examines how Atiśa Dīpaṅkara Śrījñāna aided in the dissemination of these traditions to Tibet during the eleventh century, in part through encouraging the enactment of transgressive rituals via internal visualization. I will do so through the exploration of …
If You Meet the Buddha on the Road: Buddhism, Politics, and Violence. Michael Jerryson
The Rhetoric of Violence in the Buddhist Tantras
This article explores the rhetoric of violence in the Buddhist tantras, arguing that it generally falls into two types: (1) violence deployed in a purely rhetorical fashion for the purpose of impressing or persuading the reader; and (2) textual depictions of violent ritual practices, which can, with some caveats, be interpreted as depictions of, and possibly prescriptions for, ritual violence. The former type often includes grandiose or exaggerat…
Tantric Traditions in Transmission and Translation
This volume explores the movement of tantric Buddhist traditions through time and space, from the early history of tantric Buddhism to the present day. These studies investigate the development of tantric Buddhist traditions in India, their dissemination into Central and East Asia, and exchanges between tantric Buddhist and rival religious traditions. From the hyper-masculine Buddha to the ritualized bodies of the siddhas, the first chapter trace…

Mandala of the Self: Embodiment, Practice, and Identity Construction in the Cakrasamvara Tradition
Tantric traditions have often been ignored by scholars studying Asian social history, in part because the structure of traditions, and hence their social impact, have been poorly understood. This paper seeks to remedy this lacuna by exploring in some depth a particular tradition, that centring around the Cakrasamvara Tantra, an Indian Buddhist scripture that became the basis of a popular practice tradition in Nepal and Tibet. Following Charles Ta…
Disclosing the Empty Secret: Textuality and Embodiment in the Cakrasamvara Tantra
This article seeks to shed light on the textuality of Buddhist tantras and the esotericism that characterizes this genre of literature. It first examines the development of Buddhist models of textuality. Esoteric Buddhists developed a sophisticated textual theory that linked their scriptures to the gnosis of the Buddhas, which they claimed their practices could achieve most efficaciously. But the relation between text and practice is a problemati…

TheCakrasamvara Tantra: Its History, Interpretation, and Practice in India and Tibet
This essay explores the history of theCakrasamvara Tantraand its related practice traditions. Beginning with the traditional Cakrasamvara origin myths, it introduces evidence concerning social context in which it was likely composed, and explores the debate concerning the degree to which it was influenced by Hindu Shaiva tantric traditions. It argues that the development of this tradition cannot be fully understood without taking into considerati…
Measuring Attitudes toward the Church
A 54-item multiple-choice test was developed to measure the cognitive component of attitude toward one specific concept of church. Validity and reliability were established. The rationale for the test is based on the need for multidimensional measurement, and the result is a scale which demonstrates how to delineate and measure one carefully defined referent. The scale illustrates a marked psychometric advance over the conceptually vague and undi…
Biasing Influence of Defendants' Characteristics on Simulated Sentencing
Two studies are reported in this paper. In the first study, the hypothesis that “unattractive” defendants receive more severe recommendations for sentences for a given crime than “attractive” defendants was examined. Race, socioeconomic status, and religious belief were intentionally confounded in the first study with the result that the hypothesis was clearly confirmed. In the second study, race, socioeconomic level, and religious belief were ex…
Ecological Beliefs and Behaviors: Assessment and Change
This volume fills the void created by the lack of a book-length, critical, and systematic treatment of ecological attitudes and behaviors. It emphasizes psychometrics and experimentation within a broad behavioral-cognitive framework focused on the natural world. Gray summarizes and integrates existing research and reviews major alternative approaches to measuring ecological attitudes, while presenting his own ecological attitude domain model. Rus…

Belief in Equality and Democratic Leadership Behavior in Two Russian Samples
Does the belief in equality significantly affect democratic leadership in contemporary Russia? The belief in equality is defined as a set of assumptions that human ability and potential are widely distributed rather than concentrated in elite minorities. A reliable and valid inventory of the belief in equality (BE scale) which had been developed in the United States was successfully translated into Russian. Two separate samples were studied--one …
