“Old and New,” “Raw and Ripe,” and “Novel and Fresh”
This article traces development of three sets of terms about originality in traditional Chinese literary theory and criticism: xingu 新故 (old and new), shengshu 生熟 (raw and ripe), and shengxin 生新 (novel and fresh). It argues, first, that the transition from xingu to shengshu during the period from the Southern dynasties to the Song transforms the conception of originality from a dichotomy of two opposing values to a spectrum of degrees of valuatio…
The interplay of flow, self-efficacy, learning motivation, and learning outcomes in music education
This study innovatively investigates the interplay among flow, self-efficacy, learning motivation, and learning outcomes in music education, shedding light on the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying these relationships. Employing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), it analyzes data from 241 music students in the Guangdong region to empirically test the research hypotheses. The results reveal that flow not only directly predicts learnin…

Who are the Māori “in-between”? Indigenous diversity and inequity across descent, ethnicity and Iwi knowledge
Policies increasingly reinforce the self-determination of Indigenous peoples, but issues remain around group definitions. Colonization has led to (de)identification with Māori (New Zealand's Indigenous peoples) identity markers. We explore differences between Māori on combinations of descent, ethnicity and Iwi (extended kinship group) knowledge in the 2013 Census, and self-reported discrimination. There were six groups within the Māori descent po…
Well-being and cultural identity for Māori
Research indicates that experiences in health and social services vary depending on identity. For Indigenous groups, identity and affiliation is complex. This paper explores ethnicity and knowledge of tribal (iwi) affiliations for Māori (the Indigenous peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand), and links this to health and social service outcomes in administrative data, the national Census, and Māori social survey data. While many initiatives have sought …
The neurophenomenology of early psychosis
Beyond the City Walls
The Southern Song poet Yang Wanli is known for his Chengzhai style, prominent features of which include humorous language, easy syntax, and nature as the source of inspiration. This article examines two characteristics of Yang's nature poems that contribute to the development of his unique style: photographic seeing and an emphasis on shanlin (mountains and forests). Yang often engages in intensive, camera-like observation and yearns for the spac…
