Danish films and series in a no-win-situation? Analysing the preferences of young audiences and domestic industry responses
Drawing on the media psychological concept of motivation, this article explores the reasons behind young audience’s preferences for films and series and examines how two Danish public media institutions have responded to these preferences. Methodologically, the analyses are based on mobile ethnographic studies of 20 children and interviews conducted with key personnel within the two media institutions. The article finds that—despite domestic inst…
SKAM som social utopi
In this article I discuss the Norwegian teen drama series Shame, broadcast by the public service broadcaster NRK 2015-2017. In the Scandinavian countries the series was targeted to a young audience around 16 years old but it became extremely popular among viewers of all ages, among men and women, and moreover, streaming made it available globally. The article discusses TV production for a youth audience within a public service and a commercial me…
The mediatization of health expertise
This article concerns the Danish public service broadcaster, Danmark Radio, and the programmes on health it produced from 1990 to 2010. It applies a historical perspective and, methodologically, the study is based on a qualitative content analysis of selected health programmes. Theoretically, the article is informed by 'mediatization' theory and demonstrates how television influences changes to the discursive construction of health and health exp…
Engaging, critical, entertaining
This article offers a critical periodization of the children’s programming offered by Denmark’s primary public broadcaster, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR). Through a careful analysis of content produced by DR and its youth section since 1951, the article argues that four distinct periods of children’s television can be identified, leading up to today’s competitive period. The article shows how Danish public service children’s TV has played …

Hermed demonstreres endvidere…
