  • Time After Time

    Open Access•P Dickinson•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This essay explores South African artist William Kentridge’s multimedia installation The Refusal of Time, first exhibited at documenta (13) in 2012. In the material surrounding this installation, Kentridge and Peter Galison interrogate the history of time’s material invention as a European system of imperial domination, one that gathered the planet itself into a homogeneous regime of sense. The installation explores the manifold workings of this …

  • Dispossessing Animism

    P Dickinson•ARTICLE•New Formations•2021•References: 6

This essay intervenes in the emerging discussions around animism by situating animism within the ongoing projects of colonial bio- and necropolitics. While 'animism' is often taken to denote pre- or anti- or counter-modern cosmologies that promise an alternative to the ontologies that sustain colonial violence, it has been recognised that there are in fact a variety of ways in which animism is 'built in' to modernity, and in which modernity itsel…

  • Raja Shehadeh's Palestinian Walks and the Concrete Ecology of Settlement

    P Dickinson•ARTICLE•Interventions•2018

This essay examines the significance of the practice of walking in Palestine through a reading of Raja Shehadeh's 2007 [Shehadeh, R. 2007. Palestinian Walks: Notes on a Vanishing Landscape. London: Profile] memoir, Palestinian Walks, alongside the built architecture of Israeli settlement. It develops a theory of the “concrete ecology”, a phrase that captures the deep human and extra-human entanglements that Shehadeh foregrounds in his decolonizin…

  • Dear Dorothy

    P Dickinson•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2013

Nicolas Slonimsky was born into a distinguished family in St Petersburg in 1894 and arrived in the USA in 1923. His legacy is one of a lexicographer of genius. He raised the acquisition of information to the highest level, all in a pre-digital age, and his publications were landmarks. Music since 1900 (1937, followed by further editions and supplements) has a wide scope and is not limited to major figures; he took over O. Thompson’s The Internati…

  • Feeling, Affect, Exposure

    P Dickinson•ARTICLE•Mosaic•2013

This essay considers the role of feeling and affect in theories of the sympathetic imagination through readings of Martha Nussbaum, Geoffrey Hartman, and J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace . I explore how the sympathetic imagination is irreducibly contaminated by unstable affective states that threaten its viability as a humanist ethic

  • Hitchcock's Ives

    P Dickinson•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2006

    H. Wiley Hitchcock has a long history of dedication to the cause of Charles Ives. In the preface to his new edition of 129 Songs1 he recalls his introduction to the composer in a graduate class at the University of Michigan in 1947, a time when courses on American music were virtually unknown. He listened to a badly recorded amateur performance of some of the songs: ‘I had no problem hearing through the poor recording and uncertain voice to the e…

  • Space, time, auteur-ity and the queer male body

    P Dickinson•ARTICLE•Screen•2005

What constitutes the crystal-image is the most fundamental operation of time: since the past is constituted not after the present that it was but at the same time, time has to split itself in two at each moment as present and past, which differ from each other in nature, or, what amounts to the same thing, it has split the present in two heterogeneous directions, one of which is launched towards the future while the other falls into the past. ...…
