  • Beyond Repair

    Open Access•Graziano•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2026

Breaking carries many meanings, yet public life rarely lets it remain multiple: interruption is most often made legible only as damage awaiting repair. This article follows breaking through contemporary social movements to specify what a critical tradition descending from Foucault, Scott, and De Certeau leaves underarticulated, now that infrastructural systems are designed to anticipate and absorb disruption. Reading Alfred Sohn-Rethel’s account …

  • Deciphering harm. Naming the issue in Italian healthcare struggles during the ‘60s and ‘70s

    Open Access•Graziano, Valéria Graziano•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2025•References: 1

During the 1960s and 1970s, Italian workers? movements brought together concerns for wellbeing, environmental justice, critiques of automation, and the refusal of work into a radical vision for healthcare. This chapter examines three significant case studies that highlight how workers, activists, and trade unionists developed strategies to transform lived experiences into collective narratives. The first case explores Ivar Oddone?s use of the ?do…

  • Labor Power in the Repair Shop

Graziano, Valéria Graziano et al.•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 18

This paper presents the findings of comparative research into the labor, organizational and spatial practices of a new kind of hybrid civic spaces that we refer to as “social impact-driven repair shops.” These are an emerging typology of urban spaces dedicated to repaired and up-cycled items that also go beyond the functions of a traditional shop. Significantly, these shops are run not purely for economic reasons, but rather to position themselve…

  • When care needs piracy

Graziano, Valéria Teixeira Graziano et al.•ARTICLE•Soundings•2021

The aim of the Pirate Care project is to put the politics back into caring and to disrupt the global property regime that is colonising public welfare services and turning them into privately traded assets. Piracy refers to all the practices of survival and solidarity that disobey unjust legal and social rules that support property at the expense of living beings. The idea of piracy enables the foregrounding of the need to expand the realm of con…

  • On Domestic Fantasies and Anti-work Politics

    Graziano, Valéria Graziano et al.•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2021

In this article we place the discussions of automation in post-work imaginaries within and alongside feminist critiques and understandings of domestic technology. Structured in three parts, the first surveys debates on the future of work, showing how feminist materialist critiques of technology would lend themselves to an anti-work rather than post-work politics. The second focuses on both historical and contemporary feminist critiques of domesti…

  • Figures of Unwork and Ethics of Care

    Graziano•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The hypothesis of a post-work society has provoked a newfound interest in the role of imagination in political thinking, made explicit by many authors who turned to the literary genres of utopian and sci-fi writing to sketch possible scenarios of a jobless future. This article proposes instead another mode of constructing political narratives, that of figuration. It reclaims three specific figures to demonstrate how it might be possible to build …

  • Covid‐19 as a breakdown in the texture of social practices

Open Access•Michela Cozza, Silvia Gherardi et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 9

A lot of things need to be repaired and a lot of relationships are in need of a knowledgeable mending. Can we start to talk/write about them?' This invitation - sent by one of the authors to the others - led us, as feminist women in academia, to join together in an experimental writing about the effects of COVID-19 on daily social practices and on potential (and innovative) ways for repairing work in different fields of social organization. By di…

  • The politics of collective repair

Graziano, Valéria Graziano et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2017

In this paper, we look at repair as an emergent focus of recent activism in affluent societies, where a number of groups are reclaiming practices of repair as a form of political and ecological action. Ranging from those that fight for legislative change to those groups who are trying to support ecological and social change through everyday life practices, repair is beginning to surface tensions in everyday life and as such poses opportunities fo…

  • Passion without Objects. Young Graduates and the Politics of Temporary Art Spaces

    Open Access•Mara Ferreri, Graziano et al.•ARTICLE•Recherches Sociologiques•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This paper addresses the position of young arts graduates seeking to respond to the unequal access and precarity of jobs in the cultural sector by establishing artist-led temporary spaces. With the increasing dissemination of the discourse of pop-up urban uses in the United Kingdom since 2008, former genealogies of autonomous self-organised spaces intersect with the urban agendas of public commissioners and private actors. Following a long-establ…
