Learning Modalities During Covid ‐19 and Adolescent Mental Health in North Carolina
BACKGROUND: The mental health of youth represents a critical public health issue and has worsened over the course of the pandemic, partially attributed to social isolation and school closures. METHODS: This analysis leveraged data on school learning modality (COVID-19 School Data Hub), emergency department (ED) visits (North Carolina SHEPS data), and school-district characteristics (National Center for Education Statistics) to investigate how sch…

Exploring Parents’ Experiences With Dispute Resolution Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 in Schools
Given the broad nature of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973), it is likely that families and school professionals may have disputes about the receipt of accommodations. Although over a million children have Section 504 plans from their schools, to date, no research has examined family experiences with dispute resolution under Section 504. By characterizing families’ experiences, targeted proactive, district- or state-level interventions…
Help-Seeking Patterns during Weather Events
The 2-1-1 information and referral system connects vulnerable populations to essential services during public health emergencies. However, there is limited evidence examining the specific needs of unhoused populations during these events. This study examines associations between temperature variations, tropical cyclones, and service utilization patterns among unhoused populations using 2-1-1 call data from southern Louisiana (2014-2023). Analyzin…
Disparities in suicide risk trajectories among youth during the Covid ‐19 pandemic
The pandemic contributed to an ongoing youth mental health crisis, though mental health burdens are disproportionately distributed within youth populations. The objective of this study was to identify latent trajectories of youth suicide risk during the COVID-19 pandemic and examine differential risk by demographic subgroups. We leverage a national crisis dataset (n = 6741 youth in crisis) and employ latent Markov models and multinomial logistic …
Looking at the Wood, Seeing the Trees and More
The Australia-New Zealand Tree-Ring Conference was held January 21–23, 2025, at Waipapa Taumata Rau/University of Auckland, in Aotearoa/New Zealand. It was intended to provide an opportunity for the Australian and New Zealand dendrochronological researchers to meet, present current research, and discuss the challenges and opportunities in working with Southern Hemisphere tree species, but it was open to others outside of Australasia, including so…
Structural influences on psychiatric emergency department visits among racial and ethnic minority youth in North Carolina
Short-term changes in mental health help-seeking behaviors following exposure to multiple social stressors and a natural disaster
A difference-in difference analysis of the South Carolina 2015 extreme floods and the association with maternal health
Mapping high-risk clusters and identifying place-based risk factors of mental health burden in pregnancy
Purpose: Despite affecting up to 20% of women and being the leading cause of preventable deaths during the perinatal and postpartum period, maternal mental health conditions are chronically understudied. This study is the first to identify spatial patterns in perinatal mental health conditions, and relate these patterns to place-based social and environmental factors that drive cluster development. Methods: We performed spatial clustering analysi…
Spatial Analysis of Greenspace and Mental Health in North Carolina
Greenspace positively impacts mental health. Previous research has focused on the greenspace-mental health relationship in urban areas. Yet, little work has looked at rural areas despite rural communities reporting similar rates of poor mental health outcomes and higher rates of suicide mortality compared with urban areas. This ecological research study examined the following research questions: (1) Do public and/or private greenspaces affect the…
Spatial analysis of mental health and suicide clustering among older adults in North Carolina
Late-in-life suicide is a major public health issue, with adults over 65 comprising 18% of all suicide deaths. Yet, little research has identified geographic concentrations of older populations at-risk for the psychological conditions in the pathway of suicide. This research identified spatial clustering of suicide, anxiety, depression, and self-injury among older adults in North Carolina from 2009-18 and the individual and area-level factors inf…

Pepfar support of alcohol–HIV prevention activities in Namibia and Botswana
Targeted PEPFAR support for alcohol activities resulted in several projects to address harmful alcohol use and HIV. Components are graphically conceptualized within the matrix model, demonstrating the intersections between primary, secondary and tertiary prevention activities and individual, interpersonal, community, and societal factors. Key initiative successes included leveraging alcohol harm prevention activities that enabled projects to be p…

A pilot syringe exchange program in Washington, DC
The Washington, DC City Council authorized a pilot syringe exchange program to operate for only 60 days at a single drug abuse treatment facility in the District. Only adults on the waiting list for treatment were eligible (n = 467). Of the 33 who enrolled, median duration of drug injection was 18 years. Twenty-seven participants denied needle sharing. Of 209 needles distributed, 69% were returned. Low enrollment might have been due to restrictiv…
