  • The effect of ethnic group on sexual activities related to contraception and stds

John D Baldwin, Scott Whiteley et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1992•Cited by: 19•References: 4

There is a paucity of empirical data available on how ethnicity affects various sexual behaviors on college campuses. A questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of college students, and 1,173 students completed the questions requesting information about their sexual, contraceptive and STD‐related behavior. Minority students—Asians, Blacks, and Latinos—were oversampled in order to test numerous effects of ethnic group on selected sexual, contra…

  • Changing aids‐ and fertility‐related behavior

Janice I Baldwin, Scott Whiteley et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1990•Cited by: 11

A questionnaire was used to access the effectiveness of a ten‐week university course on human sexuality in changing students' AIDS‐ and fertility‐related behavior. The students' knowledge and behavior were evaluated (1) early in the class before there were any discussions or readings about sexual behavior, AIDS, or birth control and (2) three months later—approximately one month after completing the class. A randomly selected control group of stu…

  • Factors affecting aids‐related sexual risk‐taking behavior among college students

    John D Baldwin, Janice I Baldwin•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1988•Cited by: 46•References: 2

Questionnaires were mailed to a random sample of students at a university in Southern California. The results revealed that for the most part, students were engaging in few activities that would protect them from contracting the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Regression analyses were used to evaluate several variables related to sexual risk‐taking, i.e., condom use, number of sexual partners in the last three months, and casual sex. The most…

  • Sociobiology or Balanced Biosocial Theory

    John D Baldwin, Janice I Baldwin•ARTICLE•The Pacific Sociological Review•1980•References: 32

Increasing numbers of sociologists are showing interest in biosocial theories. We present three central criteria for a balanced biosocial theory, i.e., a theory which provides a balanced integration of both genetic and environmental determinants of behavior. Ethology and sociobiology do not possess the properties of balanced theories; and Type II errors make it unlikely that they will reject the key assumptions which make them unbalanced. There a…

  • Reduction and The Future of Sociology

    Open Access•John D Baldwin, Janice I Baldwin•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•1980•Cited by: 2•References: 19

The reductionist position of Homans and Skinner has generated substantial debate among sociologists over the past two decades. Mitch of the debate can be resolved by examining the issues in light of the history of science. A historical analysis suggests that modern sociology has little to lose-and something to gain-by reevaluating its traditional stance on reduction

  • Exploration and play in howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata)

    Open Access•John D Baldwin, Janice I Baldwin•ARTICLE•Primates•1978

  • Behaviorism on Verstehen and Erklaren

    John D Baldwin, Janice I Baldwin•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1978•Cited by: 7•References: 6

Modern behaviorism has made significant progress in analyzing private behavior: cognition and emotion. The behavioral distinction between contingency-shaped and rule-governed behavior establishes a starting point for analyzing tacit (subjective, private) knowledge and explicit (objective, public) knowledge. The present paper extends this analysis to include the issues of verstehen and erklaren. One subset of tacit knowledge is verstehen. Behavior…

  • The dynamics of interpersonal spacing in monkeys and man

    John D Baldwin, Janice I Baldwin•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1974•References: 25

Data from primate studies suggest that social spacing in many species is controlled by conditioning effects. As do monkeys, humans divide up their social space in ways that closely reflect underlying personality factors and social patterns. Although much of social spacing is beyond conscious awareness in daily life, the study of animals and humans has begun to establish the factors that govern proxemic behavior
