  • A functionalist account of truth-grounding: Refining Lynch’s view

    Open Access•Tadatoshi Akiba•ARTICLE•Synthese•2025•References: 31

This paper aims to improve on Michael Lynch’s functionalist account of truth-grounding. According to Lynch, truth is grounded in another (non-generic) alethic property when the latter has all the conceptually essential features of truth. However, this view faces a problem raised by Marian David (“Lynch’s Functionalist Theory of Truth”) and Crispin Wright (“A Plurality of Pluralisms”), which is that some conceptually essential features of truth ar…

  • Alethic pluralism and truthmaker theory

    Open Access•Tadatoshi Akiba•ARTICLE•Theoria•2023

According to alethic pluralism, sentences belonging to different domains of discourse can be true by having different alethic (i.e., truth‐constituting) properties. Against this pluralistic view, Jamin Asay has recently argued that pluralists' appeal to multiple alethic properties is ill‐motivated because the main advantages of pluralism can already be obtained within the framework of standard truthmaker theory. In response to this objection, thi…

  • The Nuclear Age at 64: Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the Struggle to End Nuclear Proliferation

Open Access•John Kingston, Jeff Kingston et al.•ARTICLE•Japan focus•2009

That weapon of human extinction, the atomic bomb, was dropped on the people of Hiroshima sixty-four years ago. Yet the hibakusha's suffering, a hell no words can convey, continues. Radiation absorbed 64 years earlier continues to eat at their bodies, and memories of 64 years ago flash back as if they had happened yesterday

  • Why Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day Events Matter. Hiroshima & Nagasaki Peace Declarations

The 62nd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima occurs today, August 6, 2007, bringing with it thousands of commemoration ceremonies in cities and towns around the world. Such events have become part and parcel of the nuclear era, and include the lighting and floating of lanterns in memory of the dead, silent vigils, religious observances, the chalking of human "shadows" on the ground, readings of John Hersey's Hiroshima, and leafletting
